Summary

It's 1938, and Sarah Caselton is preparing for her new job at Woolworths. Before long she forms a tight bond with two of her colleagues, the glamorous Maisie and shy Freda, as well as beginning a blossoming romance with young assistant manager Alan.

But with the threat of war clouding the horizon, the young employees of Woolworths realize that there are bigger battles ahead. It's a dangerous time for the nation and an even more perilous time to fall in love....

Well written 'cosy' story.

A cosy story about the girls working in Woolworths and their lives during WW2. Nicer easy to read book. Just right with a cu of rea and a pleasant evening in.

Excellent wartime love story, factually interesting and correct and beautifully narrated

I really enjoyed listening to this. It is the first of Elaine Everest’s novels that I have experienced and it definitely won’t be the last! Beautifully written with enough fact about wartime life in South East London and working for Woolworths which makes this book not only a great fictional love story but also interesting. Wonderfully narrated by Annie Aldington with her lovely Southeast London accent which brings the book alive and takes you straight to 1939 Erith, Kent.

Fabulous story brought beautifully to life

Such vivid and wonderful characters. The BBC must turn this into a TV series, it would be a huge hit.

The reader brought such warmth to the narration of this story. Going to get straight into the next book in the series right away.
