The leafy world of Blackmoor Vale and the hamlet of Little Hintock are all lovingly described by Hardy, who named The Woodlanders as the favorite of all his novels; upon re-reading it 25 years after its publication, he claimed, with certainty, it was the book he liked ‘best of all’.

Stephen Thorne's narration is really excellent. He captures the voices of the characters so well.

Beautifully written story. One of Hardy's best but least known. Its all there, the twists & turns in the story, the magical but real landscape & the recogniseable characters, even if they come from an earlier time. I read this book years ago, as in 40 years, but had forgotten the plot. So was like a first time reading. Now. The reader here, Stephen Thorne does a superb job & I absolutely recommend his reading. Infact I started listening to the Samuel West version first but switched to this one. West is very skilled & popular for good reason. But Thorne's reading is more authentic & much preferable to my mind. So there you go. Enjoy!

Excellent narration,atmospheric story,beautiful combination of poetry and prose ,doesn't give any feeling gratuitous writing which I feel some of Hardy's work does.
