Luke is a comic-mad 11-year-old who shares a tree house with his geeky older brother, Zack. Luke's only mistake is to go for a wee right at the wrong time. While he's gone, an alien gives his undeserving, never-read-a-comic-in-his-life brother superpowers and then tells him to save the universe. Luke is massively annoyed about this, but when Zack is kidnapped by his archnemesis, Luke and his friends have only five days to find him and save the world.... Hilariously narrated by Joe Thomas.

Summary
The Wombles is the first ever Wombles book and introduces the stern but kindly Great Uncle Bulgaria; Orinoco, who is particularly fond of his food and a subsequent 40 winks; general handyman extraordinaire Tobermory, who can turn almost anything that the Wombles retrieve from Wimbledon Common into something useful; Madame Cholet, who cooks the most delicious and natural foods to keep the Wombles happy and contented; and last but not least, Bungo, one of the youngest and cheekiest Wombles of all, who has much to learn and is due to venture out onto the Common on his own for the very first time.…

A trip down Memory lane
I have fond memories of watching the Wombles on TV when I was a child and so downloaded it recently for my two sons.
They both LOVED it and the youngest one listens to these stories over and over! Interestingly I also found them some of the original TV programmes, but these haven't held them nearly as well as the audiobooks!
One of the best audiobooks I've downloaded! Well done

It was so lovely to discover all the wonderful Wombleful characters again. The story follows Bungo's first year as a working Womble.
The stories are written so well that even as an adult I enjoyed them all.

Fabulous!
My father gave me The Wombles when it was first published by Puffin Books in the early 70s for my 8th birthday. I was hooked from the first chapter and became a huge Womble fan! My bedroom was lined with Womble posters and I owned a gorgeous Orinoco soft toy, who my son later inherited. I couldn’t resist this audiobook and thought it might be a fun listen in this time of turmoil. I was right! Yes, it’s a children’s book, but it is full of gentleness, kindness and humour, all qualities which never date and which are important whatever your age. I felt refreshed and calm by the end, which was exactly what I had hoped for. I just wish the wonderful Bernard Cribbins would narrate the whole series. He is perfect.

Great - but key part of story omitted accidentally
Love this story and reading, but somehow the key scene (Orinoco's finding cakes in the snow) is omitted.
At 3:27:14 Chapter 9 ends with "I never did finish that crossword!" but there are 4 critical pages of the
chapter and story left to go!

The best!!
Brilliant stories, extremely well read, I fall asleep to them every night without fail as they calm me. I never read the books as a child but remember the TV series. They are even more fascinating for adults and anyone who likes children's books will love these stories.
I hope audible publishes all the other books , and as a film is due out in future here's hoping. . . I think there is 1 other publishing but it's only 48 mins so I haven't purchased it yet.

Lovely in a Winnie-the-Poo sort of a way
This is a series of short stories, rather than one long one; perfect for a stop/start car journeys. It's ideal for younger audiences. If you like Winnie-the-Poo, then you'll love this. Lots of furry little creatures getting into scrapes - but nothing too frightening. Also Bernard Cribbins has a wonderful voice. Could listen to him for hours. Even my 7 yr old (Ben 10, Biker Mice from Mars) was enjoying it!

Charming
Would you consider the audio edition of The Wombles to be better than the print version?
I wouldn't say one version is better than another, but Bernard Cribbins does a great job narrating, and we can listen as a family and enjoy the book together (one of the things we love about audio books in general).
What other book might you compare The Wombles to and why?
The story reminded us of a combination of The Wind in the Willows, The Borrowers, A Bear Called Paddington, the hobbits from Tolkien, and Fraggle Rock
Any additional comments?
We thought this story was just adorable. We did laugh out loud several times. We'd like to hear more of the Wombles books, especially if they're narrated by Bernard Cribbins, for it's nice to have the continuity in a series.
