Story
Pinter and Martin's Why it Matters series offer succinct, balanced and evidence-based introductions to the topics that affect family life in the 21st century. The Politics of Breastfeeding, first published in 1988, described how big business and vested interests influence the intimate relationship between mothers and their babies to the detriment of all, rich or poor, in the West or in the developing world. In Why the Politics of Breastfeeding Matter, the central ideas of the politics of breastfeeding are distilled into a concise form, making it the perfect introduction to understanding the complex forces that govern what many think of as a simple choice to breastfeed or not.

Story
It’s time for a childbirth revolution. Childbirth has always been, and always will be, a significant rite of passage that transforms a woman into a mother. However, the modern approach to maternity care fails women, families, and care providers with outdated practices that center the needs of institutions rather than individuals. In this audiobook, Rachel Reed demonstrates how childbirth can be reclaimed to center women and support birth physiology.

To say I was totally clueless about breastfeeding before listening to this book would be an understatement. I have learned so much and have had many of my concerns and questions addressed within this resource and not just those regarding breastfeeding. I was very pleased and appreciate the fact that this book talks about natural childbirth as well. So, so glad to have been recommended this book by an experienced nursing mother.

Probably better as a physical book
I ended up exchanging this but plan to buy the physical book. It just became such a chore to listen to - very repetitive and I'd like to be able to skip sections that are irrelevant to me. It seems like it does have a lot of good advice but I don't need it read front to back to me.
It is very biased for unmedicated natural birth and anti-formula which I totally made me hesitant but I found that it didn't really bother me; maybe fresh from my failed first breastfeeding experience it would but 3 years out I've come to terms with it. I had an induction with pitocin and an epidural and an overall great birth experience but then struggled to breastfeed due to latch and low production so ended up only being able to give my first child one bottle of pumped breast milk daily and the rest formula. He's perfectly healthy and super smart; this second time around I'd really like to exclusively breastfeed so looking for more advice but I'm not sure I'm up for an unmedicated birth and know it's possible to have a perfectly well child if you end up needing formula. So I took the book's views as an ideal to aim for as it may help this time but won't be beating myself up if I don't quite do it their way - there's more to mothering than just birth and breastfeeding and however you get there, you're doing your best!

Buy the physical book instead!
This book is filled with great info, and also a ton of superfluous commentary that seems to never end. The narration is also extremely challenging to listen to for 17 HOURS...it sounds like your grandma who also imitates children’s voices...it is beyond painful. However, the info on breastfeeding is good. I wish I had purchased the physical book so I could have skipped the unnecessary commentary and used it as a reference guide in the future.

Antiquated book, Deeply annoying narrator
Despite claims to the contrary, this book is woefully outdated. It actually has anecdotes from the 1950’s and issue outdated terminology. This combined with the narrator’s cloying, preachy voice makes this a terrible audiobook.
Bottom line, this is a reference book and really not the right format for audio.

Better as Hard Copy
Lots of tips for breastfeeding but better as a hard copy to refer to in the future. I also prefer Babywise as they follow the PDF schedules - this book seems to promote on demand feeds and Babywise goes deeper in on why those aren’t necessarily good.
