Summary

Prosperous, and the secret that it hides beneath its ruins...

The community of Prosperous, Maine has always thrived when others have suffered. Its inhabitants are wealthy, its children's future secure. It shuns outsiders. It guards its own. And at the heart of Prosperous lie the ruins of an ancient church, transported stone by stone from England centuries earlier by the founders of the town... But the death of a homeless man and the disappearance of his daughter draw the haunted, lethal private investigator Charlie Parker to Prosperous.

Parker is a dangerous man, driven by compassion, by rage, and by the desire for vengeance. In him the town and its protectors sense a threat graver than any they have faced in their long history, and in the comfortable, sheltered inhabitants of a small Maine town, Parker will encounter his most vicious opponents yet. Charlie Parker has been marked to die so that Prosperous may survive.

Terrific!

I love all the Charlie Parker stories, and this one is no exception. John Connolly writes such engaging characters, and the plotlines are so gripping that I'm always reluctant to leave Charlie's world when duty calls. I've read all the novels to date and started on the audiobook versions - from the beginning - last year. The narrator is perfect. His handling of the different voices is impeccable. You're never in any doubt as to which character is speaking.

If you've never read the previous books in the series, it's not a problem. This can easily be listened to as a standalone, but I would recommend checking out the others first as the character development across the novels are beautiful to behold. Highly recommended!

Stop the voices!

Great story but the delivery of the dialogue undermines it. Everyone but the protagonist sounds like they're from a bad cartoon.

Excellent

I guess reading some other reviews, it's clear you have to be a Connolly fan and to be reading this book in sequence. That's me. Jeff Harding is one of my favourite narrators and, like the Jack Reacher series, I can't imagine anyone else narrating Charlie Parker and friends. Angel & Louie are laugh out loud funny for me, but I've created a 13 book relationship with them and they're my favourite characters. This was another excellent story in the series and the linkage to other books and characters is one of the things I enjoy the most, but if you're coming to this book first, you're going to struggle to follow all the threads. This is a constantly building series that requires your commitment to start at the beginning, but in my opinion, is worth the investment of time. One of the most enjoyable book series I've ever read/listened to!

A particularly fine one

Gripping, well- balanced, featuring all our favourite characters from the excellent Charlie Parker series - and unusual, since in this episode Parker tells the story first hand. Echoes of Stephen King, here.. atmospheric and irresistible, and all brought to brilliant life quite beautifully, by the ever-reliable and sublimely gifted Jeff Harding. Thank you, Audible!

Excellent

Once again a great listen to a master storyteller. The saga of Charlie Parker is building towards a mesmerising climax. How much longer Charlie and his friends can go on battling unseen and supernatural forces reminds to be seen. There is still another book in the series which I can't wait to start. The wolf in winter was a great story and as always Jeff Harding narration was excellent. However I do think the listener would benefit from having read or listened to other books in the series as it may not always make sense if you are not familiar with the past. Highly recommend.

Absolutely fabulously book

Absolutely great read/listen. If you have followed Charlie Parker this far you’re will not be disappointed. Some of the overall storyline comes together while following a new adventure. Great story and Jeff Harding does a, as always, great job at narrating the story.

Amazing

Loved it from start to finish, it’s deep and painful and mysterious and Louis and Angel colour it just enough to make it a great fun to read.

John Connolly

I like John Connolly's 'Charlie Parker' books. Have read his books over the years and must say this is one of his best. Loved the story line, with a very good narrator to make it enjoyable to listen to.
