About this listen

“How the people love a sinner, especially when she is a woman. Witch! Witch!”

The Dark End of the Street is a television program that pries into the business of Barry and Cheryl Higgins and their three small children, uncovering every nasty aspect of their lives on welfare in front of a fascinated and disgusted audience. The couple didn’t get rich off the wildly successful reality show, though, so why would anyone want to kidnap the kids? When the two older children are found, there is little doubt that Cheryl planned their disappearance to win the public’s affection and boost the show’s ratings. As the media and the legal system condemn Cheryl, one question remains: Where is baby Cara?

Gillian White adeptly demonstrates how the public’s need to know and to judge - and how people can profit from those impulses - is a modern kind of witch hunt.

I really enjoyed this. It really gets you thinking about the effects of how reality shows affect people’s actions and thoughts. Well written and read. One of those stories that linger in your memory long after reading!

A story of modern life

The story challenges your assumptions & judgements of human behaviour. Loved the narrator. It had me laughing out loud and also feeling so bloody sorry for the characters involved. Brilliant I’d definitely recommend.

Wonderfully different

About an hour or so in I considered skipping this book but I stuck with it and the story got better and better. I had some suspicions as to the plot but I also got loads wrong so it was great to hear the story unfold. No one likes totally predictable stories. Narration is pretty good too.

Slow start, worth hearing it out

A despicable tale of exploitation of a young needy couple by the media and the subsequent press. it shows how mass hysteria can be risen and fueled!
A truly clever story of twists and turns. I was mesmerised. I found the narrator a tad irritating at times but not so much that I couldn't listen. A fab story..... Worth a go.

Never saw it coming!
