Summary

The year is 1880. Two hundred years after the trials in Salem, witches Adelaide Thom and Eleanor St Clair finally feel safe and have opened a tea shop in Manhattan, specialising in cures, palmistry and potions.

When an enchanting young woman called Beatrice joins the witches as an apprentice, she soon proves indispensable, but her new life is marred by strange occurrences. She sees things no one else can see. She hears voices no one else can hear. Objects appear out of thin air, as if gifts from the dead. Has she been touched by magic, or is she simply losing her mind?

Amidst the witches' tug-of-war over how best to nurture her gifts, Beatrice disappears - but was it by choice or by force? In the desperate search, the witches are confronted by spectres from their own pasts. In a time when women were corseted, confined and committed for merely speaking their minds, were any of them really safe?

An easily listened to rather curious book!

This book needed perseverance on my part to get into the story and the "feel" of the book. It is a book that needs the reader to be open minded about the supernatural otherwise you could find yourself not having any sympathy with the main characters, but luckily they are so well and gently portrayed that I don't think their being witches would be a problem to most people!

The story shows the best and worst of human nature, the way that even people who should know better can exploit those they care about, the way fanaticism pervades in all walks of life but also how people can care about each other in the face of perversity. It also tries to show how women , even in the 1880s, could be strong in time when they were supposed to be shadows of men.

All in all, not one of the most memorable books I've ever listened to or read, but quite pleasant if you persevere.

A very enjoyable book.

After trying to listen to two previous audio books and failing miserably, I found this delightful book. The narrator was excellent and read the book in a way that kept you intrigued to hear more. I highly recommend it.

Awful narrator -- annoying, monotonous intonation!

I don't know if the story of this book is good or not; the narration was so bad that I couldn't focus on the story. Unfortunately, it's impossible to leave a review without giving a rating for the overall quality and the story. In any case, the performance seemed very amateurish. While it's unrealistic to expect that every narrator is a good as Cassandra Campbell or Shiromi Arserio, it's incredible to think that someone paid real money for Laurence Bouvard to read it. Her voice is annoying for several reasons. First and foremost, she has an intonation and delivery that are so repetitive and monotonous, I can only imagine them appropriate for an instruction manual. While she tries to do different voices for the various characters, her efforts are not successful, especially for anyone with a higher voice. So grating! I tried to stick with it, but am finally giving up after only 45 minutes into it. I'm returning it immediately after writing this review!

Cou'dn't finished it after 10 hrs of trying

I wish I had given up earlier and not gone passed the point of not being able to return it. I tried and tried to like it, several times I wanted to give up but kept thinking give is a little more time. It took chapters and chapters to get into anything vaguely resembling a story which was hard to piece together. Just about when I thought we could be getting somewhere, it got onto some pretty crude language and descriptions about prostitution and swearing that I just found crude and unexpected. I couldn't see how it was going to be necessary and I didn't care enough for the story or characters to persevere with it any longer. So with only 4 hrs left to go to, I gave up and really I wish I could have those 10 hours of my life back.
Don't try this if you are a usual lover of fantasy, witches and supernatural. It's just not worth it.

Nice and slow

It’s definitely a book that takes its time to get anywhere and the first third was all set up before the beginning of the story which was another solid third of the book. The rest was the middle and end. It made the book immersive and you knew the world of the characters but it meant what was being set up in the beginning of the book (middle third) very condensed and in some cases dropped as the story developed. Get the feeling it’ll be a series and I would be interested in continuing; probably wouldn’t have picked up in a shop but listened to for a poscast

Def worth a listen!

Great story and language, well written and loveable characters. Narrator a bit whiney and nasal at times which distracted an took you out of the story.
