Summary

‘Twas a time when dragons left their lair and evil shadowed the land....

On the Day of Reckoning, the witches of Eileanan were outlawed - and violations of the new order were punishable by death. Eileanan’s Great Towers, once meccas of magic and learning, were left in ruins. And now, the entire land trembles in fear.

Yet deep in the mountains, in the shadow of Dragonclaw, a young girl is being tutored in the old ways. Ignorant of her past, uncertain of her future, the foundling Isabeau will soon be forced down a dangerous path of prophecy, conspiracy, and magic. It is a world where dragons possess the key to ancient mysteries, where a lost prince will discover a strange and wondrous destiny, and where the ultimate battle between good and evil will be waged.

A new Day of Reckoning is at hand....

First book in a series

And because it is, don’t expect a resolution of any kind. This is just a scene setter. That’s alright as a concept but makes for a pretty unsatisfying read. I don’t know if I’ll read the next yet. I can’t be bothered to wait until book 6 to find out what happens to someone I’ve forgotten about because they haven’t appeared since book 4.

I am afraid!

I am 5 hours into this book and I am afraid. I am afraid I have started something amazing of which only the first book has been written. Is that a phobia? I feel like that should have a name.

A Great Series

I have read the paperback version of this book more times than I can count and I have loved this series since I first discovered it. I was so excited to see it is finally coming out on audible. The narrator did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life and speaking in a clear voice. Although the accent is heavy, it is easily understood and really brings the characters different personalities to life. The voices used make it extremely easy to differentiate between each character. I highly recommend this book. If you love a story of magic and sci fi filled with great accents and a gripping story then this series is for you.

Waited a long time for this series

I stumbled across this book in my campus bookstore when it was new and read the series several times over the years. I’ve waited and searched for this to be released on an audio version for years. I knew the most important choice for this book would be the narrator. The accent would be critical. Elle Newlands was a new narrator to me and did not disappoint! I’m so happy to finally have this on Audible ❤️

Excellent!

The narrator did a beautiful job bring this wonderful tale to life! Although it took me a little bit of the book to adjust to the new universe & phrasing, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger I am excited that the second book is already available and it looks like the rest of the books are coming soon :)

So Good

This book was so good I binged it in two days. Great story and start to a series. I had been in the biggest book slump I can remember before finding this book. Great fantasy story for those who like fantasy but can’t get into high fantasy novels. I can’t recommend the book enough. I have been a fan of Kate Forsyth since discovering her book Bitter Greens. Her books are full of imagination and great writing. She is indeed a story teller. I’m very happy that this is a series and have already purchased all the books.

Excellent fantasy but.....

Here's the thing. And bare with me -- this is excellent fantasy. I love the mythology, the story, the characters. I love the narrator and the audible nature of this book. But I was surprised --in fact completely surprised -- by the torture/rape scene in this novel. In fact, it is so explicit, so ultimately demoralizing that it is almost beyond belief, Look, this is a good fantasy series but I question the author's judgment in essentially raping a juvenile (yes hello -that is rape of a child) and then torturing her in a scene to create some drama. Frankly I believe I will be asking for my money back on this book after stewing on that scene for a few weeks. It makes me wonder what kind of author writes that type of scene and makes me wonder why audible doesn't screen this just a tiny bit. Look i get it --its a fantasy series, its well-written, . But c'mon -- to torture a little girl with rape and pain ... I dunno. Yes I will ask for a return on this novel. Even if I wanted to see where the story went (with her poor broken hand for months afterward). Maybe we should consider that rape of a child and torture isn't something we should accept in novels no matter how well-written. Maybe we shouldn't put our credits to that type of book. And BTW I am an attorney and that was rape of a child in almost any jurisdiction I know. So if you want good fantasy here it is. But you also get other stuff as well. Refund request incoming.

Irritating to listen to

I can't handle the constant accent of the reader and the fact that what constitutes a new voice for a different character is slight variations on how hard the accent is.. listened to maybe 4+ hours I don't recall exactly how much I made it through but I can not finish this I just get so put off by the performance
