"The Lottery," one of the most terrifying stories of the twentieth century, created a sensation when it was first published in the New Yorker. "Powerful and haunting," and "nights of unrest" were typical reader responses. This collection, the only one to appear during Jackson's lifetime, unites "The Lottery" with 24 equally unusual stories. Together they demonstrate her remarkable range - from the hilarious to the truly horrible - and power as a storyteller.

Story
Abigail Accused steps into life in a small New England colony and reveals the callous truth of what has become one of many landmark cases against injustice during the Salem Witch Trials. Abigail Dane Faulkner, daughter of the town’s respected minister, was convicted of witchcraft in 1692 and condemned to die. Her story is based on eyewitness accounts and 17th-century documents. How did the people of Massachusetts Bay Colony become victims of the fear and religious fanaticism that led to the arrests of nearly 200 citizens and the executions of countless innocents?

This true story was the basis for the Broadway play, The Runner Stumbles, and the movie of the same name. In 1907, a Felician nun disappeared from her rural convent. When her bones were found buried in the dirt-floored basement of the remote, Gothic church she served, it caused a national sensation. Who killed her? The handsome priest? The jealous housekeeper? And, what other secret was uncovered along with her bones?

Animal Farm is George Orwell's great socio-political allegory set in a farmyard where the animals decide to seize the farmer's land and create a co-operative that reaps the benefits of their combined labours. However, as with all great political plans, some animals see a bigger share of the rewards than others and the animals start to question their supposed utopia.

Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs. Brilliantly conceived and executed, this powerful evocation of 21st-century America gives full rein to Margaret Atwood's devastating irony, wit and astute perception.

Summary
A detailed account of one of the strangest and most shocking episodes in American history, written by the author of "The Lottery".
Stories of magic, superstition, and witchcraft were strictly forbidden in the little town of Salem Village. But a group of young girls ignored those rules, spellbound by the tales told by a woman named Tituba. When questioned about their activities, the terrified girls set off a whirlwind of controversy as they accused townsperson after townsperson of being witches. Author Shirley Jackson examines in careful detail this horrifying true story of accusations, trials, and executions that shook a community to its foundations.

A chilling, fascinating non-fictionalised account.
This book is perfect for anyone wishing to know a bit more about the infamous Salem witch trials, namely: how horrific the ordeal actually was, the extremes that those people got to, and the repressive, hypocritical society they lived in. For the most part, the author draws from extant trial records and correspondence, and lets the picture of mass hysteria speak for itself. Very well narrated, too.

A Good Introduction To The Nature Of Hysteria.
Shirley Jackson's book was originally intended for only schools and libraries, but is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in witchcraft or the dangers of any form of extreme orthodoxy. American was to see this again, in the 20h century with the anti communist " witch hunts" of the House Of Un-American Activities Trials of the 1940's/1950's. Infact, one wonders if this might have been in Jackson's mind, as this work was published in 1956 !
Whatever, extreme orthodoxy is a worldwide problem, whether it is religious, political or in any other form.
This excellent little book ( narrated superbly by Gabrielle de Cuir ) is a constant reminder to us all, to be forever on our guard against any future waves of hysteria, created by extreme orthodox views, wherever it may be.

A true historical horror
This audiobook was just what I wanted to start a few weeks of creepy, Halloween-themed reading. The true story of the witch hunts of Salem Village is more horrifying and fascinating than any fiction. What caused a group of pre-teen girls to accuse their neighbors of witchcraft? What made Salem's adults accept their claims so readily, with no solid evidence? Shirley Jackson's book is a great introduction to those questions and has definitely inspired me to read more about Salem.
Gabrielle de Cuir's expressive narration enveloped me in the narrative. She was especially good at portraying the women accused of being witches - whether they defied the authorities, laughed at the charges or eagerly implicated others

Lying little brats
The Crucible is my favorite play and I love listening to history. I really enjoyed this in-depth account of the Salem Witch trials. I learned some new things.
I had no idea that a 5 year old girl was accused and arrested. She also talks about the rich families that escaped Salem and fled to New York. People in other towns knew the trials were ridiculous and out of control. I also learned about spectral evidence.
I just can't believe they let these over theatrical children control their court for so long.

Historical Horror Story
Story – 5/5
Narration- 4.5/5
“The Witchcraft of Salem Village” by Shirley Jackson is a historical retelling of the Salem witch trials of 1692. History is changeable data, so I don’t know if this is 100% fact, but it rings true, and it is a compelling story.
As I was listening to the story, I realized that this is a crime tale, a history lesson, and a horror story.
The narration was straight forward and pleasant.
Recommendation – not scary because it’s History, but still well worth reading or listening to,
