Story
Author Cynthia Bourgeault investigates the imaginal realm - an energetic realm well known to the mystical traditions but often forgotten in our own times. It is invisible to the physical eye, but clearly perceptible through the eye of the heart. The imaginal realm has long been associated with the personal world of dreams, prophecy, and oracles, and it also points toward a higher vision of our human purpose that is both evolutionary and collective. Bourgeault explores both aspects of imaginal reality and tells listeners how we can cooperate more fully with its guidance in our lives.

Cynthia Bourgeault here cuts through the misconceptions to show that centering prayer is in fact a pioneering development within the Christian contemplative tradition.

Then, drawing from Gospels and the greatest Christian contemplatives, he shows you what it means to be spiritually awake. You will learn why your ego resists change and growth, what is useful about popular ideas such as the law of attraction, what Jesus, the first mythical leader in the West, can teach you.

A universal pattern can be found in all societies and in fact in all of creation. We see it in the seasons of the year; the stories of Scripture; the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus; the rise and fall of civilizations; and even in our own lives. In this new version of one of his earlier books, Father Richard Rohr illuminates the way understanding and embracing this pattern can give us hope in difficult times and the courage to push through messiness and even great chaos to find a new way of being in the world.

Story
The Bible has the astounding power to transform lives. The stories of people like Francis of Assisi, Antony of Egypt, Augustine of Hippo, Martin Luther and Martin Luther King Jr. vividly demonstrate this. Why aren't more of us transformed by Scripture today? Too often we study biblical texts without believing that God truly inhabits this book. Scripture seeks to capture our minds, not merely educate them. In this book, Chris Webb explains that we can transform our Christian life by reading as lovers rather than as theorists.

Story
In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions. Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up".

In the three steps forward, Scripture always reveals that we are related to something infinite and that ours is an enchanted and trustworthy universe.

Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved of all saints. Both traditional and entirely revolutionary, he was a paradox. He was at once down-to-earth and reaching toward heaven, grounded in the rich history of the Church while moving toward a new understanding of the world beyond. Franciscan Father Richard Rohr helps us look beyond the birdbath image of the saint to remind us of the long tradition founded on Francis' revolutionary, radical, and life-changing embrace of the teachings of Jesus.

Summary
If you put aside what you think you know about Jesus and approach the Gospels as though for the first time, something remarkable happens: Jesus emerges as a teacher of the transformation of consciousness. Cynthia Bourgeault is a masterful guide to Jesus' vision and to the traditional contemplative practices you can use to experience the heart of his teachings for yourself.

This book really resonated with me
What made the experience of listening to The Wisdom Jesus the most enjoyable?
While some of the content was quite challenging to orthodox Christianity as it is now, I found that much of what the author was saying resonated with me, made a lot of sense and ultimately made me feel much closer to and more comfortable with Jesus. Jesus came here to be our teacher and many of his most important lessons have been misinterpreted, overlooked or deliberately skewed to suit the ends of those that came later and set up Christianity as we now know it and this turned me away from the church for many years. However, books like this one seek to find the real Jesus, the real teaching and the true meaning of his life and death and resurrection. Follow and get to know the man and let him live in your heart and leave behind the the constrained practices, rules and regulations that have been built up around his name over the last 2000 years.
What other book might you compare The Wisdom Jesus to, and why?
So far, I have never read any other book like this one.
What does Jo Howarth bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
The narration was gentle and easy to listen to and I did not tire of hearing Jo's voice.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
If you thought you knew Jesus, think again. See Jesus with new vision in this thought provoking book by Cynthia Bourgeault.
Any additional comments?
This is a book that I will listen to again many times and I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.

The Wisdom Jesus
If you are a regular church attendee and are happy with the order of service in your church then perhaps this book is not for you.
If however you are looking for a deeper meaning to Christian worship a more profound meaning to the teaching of the gospel then this book is perhaps what you have been looking for.
The author challenges long held and sometimes ignorant beliefs with a new perspective on the Christian message. She says our great mistake is looking at Christ and his life with 20/20 hindsight and thinking that because we were brought up in the Christian tradition we know everything there is to know.
If this is you then think again and listen to this profound and interesting book. You will not be disappointed.

Wow!
As a western raised in a non religious christian society, I had no idea of the teachings of Christ without the dogma.
If anything, I was anti-Christ due to the connotations of ‘Jesus saves’.
Reading Jesus as a wisdom master was a revelation. I now understand him as an equal to Buddha and Lao Tzu - rather than a divisive figure who founded an outdated church based on superstition and control.
Awesome book. 10/10 recommend.

Pantheism/ Not at all Christian
This book is deceptive and weaselly and denies the sovereignty of God and acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as the One true savior. It is deeply, incredibly concerning how the author relies on her own/worldly knowledge and wrongfully teaches the messages of the Bible. Disgraceful that this kind of doctrine has snaked its way into the church. God help us.

Back to the roots
Christian theology and worship, particularly among evangelicals, is often based on bizarre interpretations of a great teacher who would have been appalled by how his core messages of love, compassion and empathy have become so twisted and lost. Bourgeault’s refreshingly brilliant book challenges us to contemplate the words of Jesus. A unique perspective, worth reading more than once.

An Excellent View Point
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
yes this was an excellent book on the topic of transforming the heart through the eyes of the Christian point of view. I totally appreciated how the author presented her points without being ultra pious or not appreciating that other religious traditions are equally valid.
Any additional comments?
I believe that this is one of those books that deserves to be listened to at least three times as the information is rich and much can be missed with only one listening. A total pleasure each time I listened. Very worthwhile.

Powerful reading for all who seek the Christ
Would you listen to The Wisdom Jesus again? Why?
I have listened to The Wisdom Jesus 3 times. It has broadened my perspective and I have learned a lot. A must-read for every open-minded Christian. This deepened my faith.
What did you like best about this story?
There are Christians who think that Christianity is just about believing the right things about Jesus - but that is not what Jesus calls us to do. Jesus calls us to "put on the mind of Christ " and be transformed. This book resonates with deep truths fromwithin the heart.
What does Jo Howarth bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I also bought the book, but I do not have as much time to read - so I listen in my car.
I do also love Jo Howarth's delivery.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This is a book to be "chewed and digested" not swallowed whole.
