About this listen

America, 1620.

Desire Minter, 19 years old, is nursing the sick aboard the Mayflower when tragedy strikes and a young woman dies.

With disease rife and food stores running low, the passengers weaken and are desperate to move ashore. As the death toll rises, Desire takes courage from her betrothed, an ambitious young physician named Jedediah Trelawney.

But as building work begins on the new village of Plimoth, a brutal winter brings uncertainty for everyone, eroding Jed’s confidence and leaving Desire wondering if she has a future in this unfamiliar land…

Does Desire have what it takes to confront the challenges of her cruel new life, and will Jed be part of her future?

A gripping tale of ambition, hardship, sacrifice and love.

This novel can be listened to as a standalone tale or sequel to Running With The Wind.

I really enjoyed this historical story narrated by the author, Dionne Haynes. The arrival of the characters on American shores was so interesting, amidst their hardships of hunger, disease and childbirth.

The main character, just after she has settled and married, is whisked back to England by her ambitious doctor husband. She is an experienced midwife and soon has plenty of work delivering babies.

The author brought the crowded, dirty streets of London alive. I particularly liked her research about medical practice at the time, with the dawning of a new era for various treatments. It really made me think how tough life must have been back then, and the details about medicines and surgeries were fascinating.

A most enjoyable listen and definitely one I would recommend.
