About this listen

Multi-award-winning historical thriller writer S. G. MacLean returns to her 17th-century heartland. Charles II has been restored to the throne. A list of men who supported Cromwell must be hunted down to face a terrible traitor's death. On that list is the name of Damian Seeker.

By the summer of 1660 the last remnants of the Republic have been swept away and the Stuarts have been restored under their king, Charles II. A list of forty-nine regicides believed to be involved in the death of Charles I is drawn up. Executions of the regicides begin to take place and the hunt intensifies for those who have gone into hiding or have fled.

Although not a regicide, staunch Republican Damian Seeker is on a list of traitors to the king. Royalist spy Lady Anne Winter is employed to find evidence of guilt or innocence among the names on this Winter List. Seeker has fled but his beloved daughter Manon remains in England, married to lawyer Lawrence Ingolby, and living in York. As the conduit to her father and to others on the Winter List and surrounded by spies and watchers, Manon lives in constant danger and fear of discovery.

At first I thought I’d be really annoyed at the lack of seeker but the book holds up really well on it’s own. Having said that, I hope we aren’t heading for a permanent change.

A Damien Seeker book with no Damian Seeker

I love all Shona Maclean's books. They are elegantly crafted and effortlessly hold your attention but I did feel that something was missing from The Winter List. Only in the Epilogue, the strongest part of the book, did I realise what it was. It wasn't uncommon for colonists to return home in the 16th century. Let's hope Damian Seeker can, too. Jonathan Keeble's narration, by the way, is superb.

Intriguing, well-written and plotted but ...

I loved this book. I realized early on that we may not see Seeker till the end, but even without him it was a compelling, well structured plot. A special mention must be given to the superb narration of J. Keeble who is one of the best narrators in the business in my opinion.

No Seeker, no matter

First Seeker, but not the first for this Author. Will now go back and listen to all the other Seeker’s while I wait to hear what happens next. Simply riveting.

So Enjoyable
