It was a clear, starry night in Glacier National Park. Fourteen-year-old Ted Systead and his father were camping peacefully beneath the rugged peaks and sweeping sky when the unimaginable happened: Ted's father was mauled by a grizzly bear and dragged to his death.
Now, 20 years later, as a special agent for the Department of the Interior, Ted is called back to investigate a crime that echoes the horror of that night. Only this time the victim was tied to a tree before the animal's attack. Ted teams up with one of the park officers - a man named Monty, whose pleasant exterior masks an all-too-vivid knowledge of the area. Residents of the nearby community are less than forthcoming. Suspicious of outsiders and intimately connected to the wilderness that surrounds them, they confront their fellow man and nature with equal measures of reverence and brutality. As the days pass with no clear answers, not only is human life at stake but so too is that of a majestic creature who carries with it valuable evidence. Ted's search for truth takes him far into the wilderness, on the trail of a killer, and eventually to a shocking and unexpectedly personal conclusion.

Brilliant listen excellent narration. Suspense without the violent description that some books have. Interesting location and informative. Look forward to the next book by this author.

There’s not one negative thing I can say about the book or the narrator, who I think contributes something powerful to the text.

Utterly beautiful, wild and deeply moving
Wow. What a book!
Brilliantly written and performed.
Atmospheric, with exquisite prose and perfect dialogue... the wildness and beauty of nature, palpable. The darker sides of humanity perfectly balanced with the light.
Love the protagonist in this story, his observations of life and behaviour. The characters are superbly formed set in a place I feel a yearning to explore now, beyond the sense of being there while listening to this book.
Loved it... I will look out for more by author Christine Carbo and narrator R.C. Bray - a fantastic union of professional storytelling.

Gripping & addictive tale
I think I've found a new favourite author to binge on. Not just a crime novel but a woven complex story of human-ness, all set against a land that makes me want to visit the place!

Cool story, slow burner.
Took its time but was a nice, easy listen. Enjoyed the setting and the characters. I’m a big fan of R.C. Bray so I’m already loving anything he puts his voice to. I will be moving on to the next in this series.

An accidental discovery
I stumbled upon this accidentally and it turned out to be a real gem. I really loved some of the language and the story had a sort of hypnotic, undulating rhythm. RC Bray's excellent narration was spot on.
