Summary
Shoggoths attack in this adrenaline-pumping novel set in the world of H. P. Lovecraft, where the horrors of the cosmos know no limits.… It was in a way humanoid, as it stood on two legs and possessed two arms that ended in delicate digits that I would dare to call hands. Its skin was a pale blue, like the eggs of a robin, and curiously dry looking. The head was massive with a huge bulbous cranium, a large lipless mouth, and three blood red eyes that stared out at the world with nothing but hate. When it opened its mouth to speak it issued forth the most horrendous of sounds, something empty and hollow, like the wind blowing through a dead tree, and it made me cringe to hear it.… The story of Dr. Hartwell (Reanimators) continues, but now he has company. Weird company: a witch, a changeling, a mad scientist, and a poet trapped in the form of a beast. These are not heroes but monsters… monsters to fight monsters. Their adventures rage across the globe, from the mountains and long-forgotten caves of Antarctica to the dimly lit backstreets of Innsmouth that still hold terrifying secrets. The unholy creatures released upon the world via the ill-fated Lake expedition to Antarctica must be stopped. And only the weird company stands in their way. Continuing in the fashion of Reanimators, The Weird Company finds Lovecraft expert Pete Rawlik taking some of the most well-known of H. P. Lovecraft’s creations and creating a true Frankenstein monster of a story - a tale more horrific than anything Lovecraft could have imagined…

You must have a working knowledge of Lovecraft.
I loved this audio book, it uses a lot of the more well.known Minecraft tales and then combines them and spins them around and upside down. This creates a whole new narrative for the method cycle.

Definitely worth a listen
To my knowledge there is no sequal to this book which sucks because apart from Loveecraft himself, Rawlick might be my favourite writer in the Mythos.
the narrator is really good aswell, I'm a fan of his wide range of accents to differentiate between all the different characters.

seamlessly continues on with some of HPs greatest
if you love the work of HP Lovecraft this is the closest you can come to sequels to some of his great works.

I liked the twist on Lovecrafts Mythos
a romp... not as disturbing as Lovecraft, but I don't think it's meant to be.

author loves Lovecraft, but....
this story could really do with a dramatacation in order to be actually good. but as is it really is... well if you know your mythos, it's a brush-up, remix and predictable. the action parts doesn't engage.
sadly this is a middling book

Very enjoyable
I enjoyed this book, it did a good job of some really gruesome and creepy scenes without reverting to cliché, despite revisiting well trodden Lovecraftian themes. That being said, I did get a bit confused at times as to exactly who was who, and how the different plot lines intercepted. That may be due to my own short attention span though.

Its.....ok
Really for hardcore HPL fans who want to hear more of the same. Stylised but if I'm really honest, slightly tedious. But very good for running in the background. Personal opinion only ofc

An overall worthy listen but read on.
This is my first book delving into the world of HP Lovecraft and I absolutely loved the mystery, exploration and story.
The voice actor is highly skilled in their trade but here is my problem, for the main character they have chosen an incessantly whining mulling demeanour, even in times where they aren't currently in a horrid situation.
To the actors credit, when some characters are experiencing pure horror this works brilliantly, but the main character is so whiney that when the narrator announced it was his chapter, Id be a bit "here we go again" attitude.
I am conflicted, as a free book it's an excellent listen, but you may get fed up listening to it, perhaps it's worth buying instead.

Deconstructing Lovecraft's work?!
This book puts a story around a very vast amount of disparate elements from the Cthulhu Mythos.
As such, it creates a canvas around those elements and tends to give an explanation to almost every cosmic horror invented by Lovecraft and his followers.
The Cthulhu Mythos is the very opposite of what this book represents, it's supposed to be vague, inconsistent, and rife with mystery. Even in Lovecraft's own stories, he constantly changes the nature of the Old Ones, he uses certain names in more than one context, and he purposefully leaves many mythical elements vague so as to emulate the way myths evolve and are forgotten over long periods of time...
Instead of adding to the collective work that is the "mythos", Peter Rawlik actively destroys it (albeit with finesse and style) with this book.
The one redeeming feature of this audio book is the quality of the narration: Oliver Wyman gives a stellar performance and the speech patterns of the main character is absolutely marvellous!

continuity in chaos
I loved this story so much. As I am becoming more and more engrossed with the fictions of Lovecraft this is the second fiction based on his works. I love that it kept to the original styles of HP with the fabulous story telling of this author. I highly highly recommend.
