Summary

What happens when a former Zen Buddhist monk and his feminist wife experience an apparition of the Virgin Mary?

“This book could not have come at a more auspicious time, and the message is mystical perfection, not to mention a courageous one. I adore this book." (Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit)

Before a vision of a mysterious "Lady" invited Clark Strand and Perdita Finn to pray the rosary, they were not only uninterested in becoming Catholic but finished with institutional religion altogether. Their main spiritual concerns were the fate of the planet and the future of their children and grandchildren in an age of ecological collapse. But this Lady barely even referred to the Church and its proscriptions. Instead, she spoke of the miraculous power of the rosary to transform lives and heal the planet, and revealed the secrets she had hidden within the rosary’s prayers and mysteries - secrets of a past age when forests were the only cathedrals and people wove rose garlands for a Mother whose loving presence was as close as the ground beneath their feet. She told Strand and Finn:

The rosary is My body,
and My body is the body of the world.
Your body is one with that body.
What cause could there be for fear?

Weaving together their own remarkable story of how they came to the rosary, their discoveries about the eco-feminist wisdom at the heart of this ancient devotion, and the life-changing revelations of the Lady herself, the authors reveal an ancestral path - available to everyone, religious or not - that returns us to the powerful healing rhythms of the natural world.

Critic reviews

"A masterwork that will leave you in tears, it comes to the world, as the Lady herself always comes, in our hour of need." (Eric Utne, founder of Utne Reader and author of Far Out Man)

"In times of turmoil we need a tangible practice to help us release worry. The Way of the Rose gives us an ancient, sustainable answer for how to root into peace and wisdom beyond dogma and traditions. I can’t recommend this book enough." (HeatherAsh Amara, author of The Warrior Heart Practice)

"Ultimately, The Way of the Rose is a love song to the world, and to the mysteries of the world. Moving and profound, powerful and elegant, it is a call for us to remember our place in the larger community of humans past, present, and future, and our place in the larger community of life on this planet." (Derrick Jensen, author of The Myth of Human Supremacy)

Gripping wakeup

There's a deep truth here that hits your heart. The narration is good. I'm not a Catholic and really it's not about Catholicism, it is about the very really need to reconnect with our hearts and to honour our Mother, only this way will we find the strength and courage to follow the right path.

Beautiful!

An amazingly beautiful book and very well narrated by the authors. I was mesmerized listening to their experiences with The Lady, and the history of the Way of the Rose. I feel that this was one of those books that I had been waiting for all my life. I had always been attracted to the rosary...it had called to me often over the years, but because of its deep roots in Catholicism, I had never really listened. That has definitely changed now.

Well worthy of a good listen and learn experience

Not maybe that appealing to mainstream religious beliefs- I found this ticked so many memory experiences from my travels worldwide and a fascination with beliefs in historical/cultural contexts along with and including the natural world. Thoroughly enjoyable and packed full of insightful ideas and information.

This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Miraculously this book came out just I started to pray the rosary for the first time and has given me a wonderful understanding of this type of prayer. I’m not catholic and neither is this book. It’s about nature, mothers and miracles. inspiring and moving thank you

Raised Catholic and never prayed the Rosary

This book was so enlightening for me. It really opened my eyes about Mother Mary and all the holy virgins. I immediately researched how to pray the rosary and miraculous medal. I actually had 3-4 rosaries That belonged to my mom and one that a friend brought me from the Vatican. I have been praying the Rosary every night and look forward to knowing Mother Mary more. Many thanks.

Just okay.

The story was okay. I think the voice of The Queen Mother didn't do justice to what she is supposed tonrepresent. The voice and the way her words were read were flat. Too much mention of environmentalist views and nature worship. I like the personal story of how this couple's spiritual journey was transformed from their own miraculous experiences with our Lady.

Profound, moving, revelatory.

A profound, insightful and deeply moving book. I was not raised Catholic, and never prayed the Rosary. I learned, though, of Christianity through osmosis, as it were, since the US is such a predominantly “Christian” culture. But, that culture always whitewashed out the feminine divine, and so as a young woman growing up, I often felt alien and alone, long sensing strongly that our world was out of balance. Clark Strand’s first book, “Waking Up To the Dark” literally awoke me to the possibility that I could help restore that balance. It set me on a path towards something I’d been seeking all my life. Or rather, I finally understood “someone” had been patiently waiting for me to hear Her voice, and turn towards it: the voice of the Mother - call her Earth, Goddess, Astarte, Kali, Source, Mary - the name does not matter so much. And, so I began to explore the Rosary since that book, as a portal into the power of our Mother. This amazing and beautiful book has been read with such nourishing love and deeply compassionate wisdom by its authors, Clark Strand and Perdita Finn, along with their daughter, Sophie Strand, whose stirringly clear voicing of “Her” provides words of solace, mixed with some real home truths that most of us are unwilling to accept about ourselves and about our part in this growing world climate crisis. It will awaken you and shake you to your core into action. It will make you wish to really look for, understand and finally, pray for your hearts desire. That is what will change our world. A deepening of the glimpsed truths and teachings hinted at in Waking Up to the Dark, The Way of the Rose provides a path, and a really simple daily practice, the Rosary, which anyone can and should do regardless of their religious upbringing, or lack thereof, along with a lifetime resource of liturgy and story, which I plan to return to and unpack, again and again. Truthful, clear and powerful in its presentation and excellent writing, it offers seekers of all walks a scholarly, wise, refreshing, balanced and deeply nourishing way of integrating the teachings of the Rosary and the Mother. My experience with these teachings have profoundly changed my life, bringing much solace, compassion and hope. May it be so for you, too.

I have been touched by this book and can’t wait to re-read it and except the invitation

I love this book so much. I am a seeker and have studied many Faith‘s and resisted Catholicism, the religion of my family of origin. For years I’ve been seeking connection with a goddess and my divine feminine. I can’t wait to listen to the book again and have ordered a hardcopy version so that I can hold it in my hands and highlight and make notes. And most of all to pray without ceasing. Thank you for writing this book.

I loved this book,.

This is the first book I have ever listened to. It accompanied me while I colored flowers in a coloring book, worked on a puzzle, took walks, or just sat and listened. I am going to buy the hard cover, so I can have it and go slowly over Our Lady's words. As a Catholic with a devotion to Our Lady in her many guises, names, and shapes, this has brought me back to the Rosary and to a new way of praying. Thank you.

Now after 55 years I really understand the rosary.

13 years Of private Catholic school not until this book do I fully understand how to pray and how to grasp and really understand the rosary. My mom nightly prays the rosary but has never taught any of her 8 children how to pray it but all my life I saw what peace it brought her and I am praying it does the same for me. Strand Clark made me realize praying the rosary is a form of meditation that we can do anytime, anywhere. Again I am blessed in my life.

Unexpected !

Would recommend this book to all Seekers like myself. Authors took a few leaps I do t believe I could substantiate about cultures over the thousands of years and directly link their daughter’s illness to toxicity on the planet but otherwise a great listen. Perhaps I will find a group?!
