About this listen

October 1943. Nineteen-year-old Polly Holmes is leaving poor bombed London behind to join the war effort on Britain's canals.

Stepping aboard the Marigold amid pouring rain, there's lots for Polly to get to grips with. Not least her fellow crew: strong and impetuous Verity, whose bark is worse than her bite, and seasoned skipper Bet.

With her sweetheart away fighting in the RAF and her beloved brother killed in action, there's plenty of heartache to be healed on the waterway. And as Polly rolls up her sleeves and gets stuck into life on board - making the gruelling journey from London to Birmingham - she will soon discover that a world of new beginnings awaits.

Good read although did listen via Whispersync. Interesting read covering a different aspect of time during the war

Enjoyed this book. But found i couldn't really enjoy the narrator's characterisations and i was also feeling let down by the abrupt ending. I hope there is a second book in the pipeline.

A bit different from usual 39-45 stories

loved it.

Absolutely awful, it was more about learning how to steer a long boat\barge, dosen matter what era, the personnel stories were lost, I did listen to the end because I hoped I would pass the training that I would be able to steer a barge if needed, and the 1 star rating is only that I could submit this.

I found the story was very slow. Also, I found the reader over exaggerated accents which didn’t help the flow

Just didn’t grip me
