The strange and suspenseful dystopian classic about an ordinary woman whose weekend away in the Austrian mountains takes an inexplicable and sinister turn - and becomes a fight for survival.

**FOR FANS OF I WHO HAVE NEVER KNOWN MEN**

A woman takes a holiday in the Austrian mountains, spending a few days with her cousin and his wife in their hunting lodge. When the couple fails to return from a walk, the woman sets off to look for them. But her journey reaches a sinister and inexplicable dead end. She discovers only a transparent wall behind which there seems to be no life. Trapped alone behind the mysterious wall she begins the arduous work of survival.

This is at once a simple account of potatoes and beans, of hoping for a calf, of counting matches, of forgetting the taste of sugar and the use of one's name, and simultaneously a disturbing dissection of the place of human beings in the natural world.

'One of the most beautiful and most harrowing books I’ve ever read, as well as one of the best' Susan Choi

'Every joint and sinew of the story is restless with a sense of threat' London Review of Books

'Brilliant in its sustainment of dread, in its peeling away of old layers of reality to expose a raw way of seeing and feeling.' Nicole Krauss

Somber yet gripping. Addressing solitude and toil and the reflection that both afford. It’s interesting to think of the wall as a metaphor for the things that devastate us and the idea that catastrophe whilst displacing everyday worries and can perhaps also usher in an altogether different perspective? Will be thinking about this for a long while to come….

Distinctive and memorable

Very enjoyable, deceptively simple read. I loved the pacing and the spacious, minimalist sentence structure, which gave the book real air and stillness. For the first time in a long time, I felt allowed to think between the words, rather than being pinned down by someone else’s literary performance. I wish I've found it earlier.

Amazing book

I thought I'd like The Wall as I love I Who Have Never Known Men, but the contrast is stark. The Wall is clinical and detached and lacks the philosophical and almost meditative feeling I was hoping for. It focuses on the repetitive logistics of survival and the ending is brutal. I didn't come away feeling a calm peace and acceptance in solitude, but more of an empty frustration.

This is truly a wonderful book about living, perseverance, nature and change.
I find myself relistening to it periodically, and every time I find something new to truly ponder upon. This book somehow has this wonderful capability of calming my emotions and filling me with hope and content.
