Summary
“The best word I can use to describe Battles's writing is addictive.” (James Rollins, New York Times best-selling author)
From USA Today best-selling author Brett Battles comes a new electrifying adventure in his award winning Jonathan Quinn thriller series.
A snowy night. A train making its way through the mountains of Austria.
Asleep in one of the private compartments is a very important passenger, a scientist who has created something others desperately want.
Precautions have been taken to ensure the man’s safe passage, but even with a highly skilled bodyguard onboard, the trip does not go as planned.
When the scientist vanishes, Jonathan Quinn and his team are sent in to locate him before the secrets in the man’s head can be extracted. Because if that happens, the world would change forever.

Brick and Battles - Two of my Favorites!!!!
This is such a fun book! As Wayne (Matthews, NC) stated in his review, this book has a little sci-fi mixed in with the story. I hope this won’t spoil the book for anyone but think Siri on steroids.
I look forward to all of Brett Battles books and have never been disappointed. This series keeps getting better with each new release. I would suggest listening to all of the books on order but each can be listened to as a stand alone.
Scott Brick is an amazing narrator. It’s always a treat to get a favorite narrator with a favorite author.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Finally available in audio!
I read the Kindle ebook version of THE UNKNOWN three months ago and loved it. The novel is even better with Scott Brick narrating. Although the publisher's summary provides only minimal information about The Unknown I plan to add very little to it other than a few teases. The novel is almost 100% located in Europe. Quinn's entire team is called in to help and all come to Europe. There is a strong element of science fiction in The Unknown which is unusual in the Jonathan Quinn series. Oh, Nate is back. The Quinn series began with The Cleaner in 2007. The Unknown, Book 14, is a great addiction to the series.
The audio version of The Unknown pairs one of the very best action thriller authors with probably the best male narrator. One cannot ask for better! The novel has my HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION.
I just checked my Audible library and find that it includes 35 novels by Brett Battlles which is more than any other author. All 35 earn 5 stars.
--------------
Edit: First I want to make a correction. The novel occurs in Europe and the landlocked central Asian nation of Kazakhstan.
My intent is not to give away the plot but to add to items of interest for Brett Battles fans. What Audible listener Shelley calls Siri on steroids, the sci-fi aspect of the novel, is named Danara. Think of Siri times 100 billion. Danara and her inverter are central to the plot.
A young Thai woman with serious computer skills, incredible courage, and an abrasive personality named Jar is now a full member of Quinn's team. It seems she will likely replace Quinn's now dead sister Liz as Nate's love interest. There is also a new character named Kincaid, an American, who may of may not became a member of Quinn's team. The current members are Quinn, Nate, Orlando, Daeng, and Jar.

JONATHAN QUINN/MY HERO!!!
I enjoyed every minute of this book! I've listened to all of the books in this series and I never grow tired of the stories. With that being said...I'm a little confused! I know that Book 13 steps back in time but at the end, it makes it clear that Durrie is still alive but Orlando thinks he's dead and blames Quinn. Book 14 picks up with Quinn and Orlando being a couple once again. I started listening to this series in 2014 so maybe this issue was addressed in an earlier book and I just don't remember. But IMO, Book 13 is ill-placed in this series. I read the other reviews and no one mentions this issue.
Regardless, this is an excellent continuation of Jonathan Quinn's adventures. And Scott Brick??? OMG!! He's fantastic as usual. Brett Battles, I hope you are writing FAST!!!!

Mediocre, Relative to Earlier Quinn
This is a good, well written, entertaining story. You’ll enjoy it. The Unknown is not, however, as good as its predecessors. It’s a bit formulaic. There are also a few too many instances of the ‘emotion-based decision-making’ syndrome — its symptoms don’t flatter the professional killer.
Scott Brick’s narration is superb.

Stupidity of Nate, Quinn, Ding & Orlando
I have read and enjoyed all 13 books in the Jonathan Quinn series. Thoroughly enjoyed, story line, narration and interactions between character. Especially when Jar is included in the conversation. I was enjoying this book also until the crew did an unbelievably foolish thing. As the plane taxied with the person they are tasked to rescue, shots were fired at the cockpit bullet proof glass, Nate took an mind boggling risk to place a tracker on the plane. No one thought of shooting out the wheels. Come on Brett, you can do much better than that!

I hang out for Brett's books
I tend to check Audible regularly for new stuff from my favourite authors. Brett Battles is one of those. I have never been disappointed by any of his novels and this one was not different. What was different was that this book introduced 2 new characters to the Quinn team that I hope Brett can explore in future novels. I am not introducing the characters here as I don't want to give anything away. As I write this I have just been advised that Brett's next book is already out in book form so I have already started The Wait until it comes out on Audible.
Keep up the excellent work mate.

Battles continues to raise the bar
I thought 4-5 books ago when he opened The Unleashed with the jungle abduction sequence that I'd never read an opening so page-ripping-great. And The Unknown, beginning with the train abduction of the scientist through the underground base rescue and recovery is just simply ADDICTIVE. On par with the best sequences written by Alistair MacLean, Lee Child or Michael Connelly, IMO.
Everything about the read is a hook, and I enjoyed it so thoroughly. Battles writes these fascinating flesh-and-blood villains, and The Unknown is no different. The storytelling, the usual cast of Quinn and Co. and the absolutely fantastic performance by Scott Brick (audio) makes this yet another one of my favorites in a series I can't get enough of. I read across a broad spectrum of crime thriller authors, and I've got EXACTLY three I have to buy on the day their new works come out: Brett Battles, Michael Connelly and Anne Hillerman (as she continues her father Tony's Leaphorn/Chee/Manuelito series).
Can't wait to dive into The Vanished.
