Story
On a dark night, along a lonely country road, barrister Frank Amberley stops to help a young lady in distress and discovers a sports car with a corpse behind the wheel. The girl protests her innocence, and Amberley believes her – at least until he gets drawn into the mystery and the clues incriminating Shirley Brown begin to add up. In an English country-house murder mystery with a twist, it's the butler who's the victim, every clue complicates the puzzle, and the bumbling police are well-meaning but completely baffled.

But the unfortunate guest list is enough to exasperate a saint, and the host, Sir Arthur Billington-Smith, is an abusive wretch hated by everyone – from his disinherited son to his wife's stoic would-be lover. When Sir Arthur is found stabbed to death, no one is particularly grieved and no one has an alibi. Fab book, TERRIBLE narration!
Georgette Heyer is wonderful as usual - hands down one of my favourite authors but oh my goodness Ulli Birve is an AWFUL narrator! She reads in five words. At any one time with. No regard for the flow. Of the sentence. Which makes for an incredibly difficult listen, however if you can get past that and have the time to rearrange the words in your head to make sense of them, you can just about follow the story. I'm sure she's a wonderful person but I suspect she is pretty hard to speak to! Sadly this has resulted in an overall three star review, which is only brought up that high by the incomparable writing of GH. Please please please re-record GH's detective novels, they are so let down by the narration.

Good story ruined
Another very good story by this author, ruined by the narrator. Does no one check the reading and pronunciation of these books before they are put on sale. Audible apparently do not care that their customers are driven mad by poor performances or they would do something about it.
This would be a brilliant audio book read by someone else.

Enjoyable mystery ruined by strained narration.
I enjoy Georgette Hayer so I staggered to the end of this one but I really wish you could get this series with another narrator. Apart from a stilled reading style she frequently mispronounces words in way that throws me right out of the book.

Story is amazing, but the reading needs to be improved
The story is both enrapturing and challenging. We have all of the classical Christie-like elements in this thriller: interesting characters, their interactions, the mystery and the society description. The reading needs improvement though. It's very hard to get into the story cause one has trouble concentrating on the monotonous monologue. It gets better though, but then slips back into flatness again and again. It's really sad and I'd wish that there will be more emphasis on the quality of the reading in future productions.

A good read
I like Georgette Heyer's novels and I have read the book. I am afraid I did not enjoy the Audio Book because of the narration. I found the reading very irritating, the English accent was stilted and some of the words were pronounced badly. It became annoying and spoilt my enjoyment of the story.

good story well done
What did you like most about The Unfinished Clue?
the house party whodunit setting
Who was your favorite character and why?
Dinah - so feisty a very "Modern Girl" in an old fashioned setting
What about Ulli Birvé’s performance did you like?
Unlike Death in the Stocks which I disliked Ulli really gets to grips with this one and it flowed along nicely - most enjoyable
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
no particular "moment" I just enjoyed the way the story came together

Stayed up late to finish it!
If you like the "oldies" (Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Patricia Wentworth, etc) then this book will be a joy. It has all the standard form of a stately home gathering, where the murder is discreetly committed (reader not subjected to too much blood and gore), the group of relatives and friends forced to remain together until the denouement where the killer is finally revealed by the Scotland Yard detective, etc. True classic British country home mystery, that does not disappoint.
At first I thought there were too many characters to sort out, but Heyerdahl handles them so well, they are each quite memorable by the end of the book. This is about the death of Arthur Billington-Smith, a perfectly horrible and cruel man that everybody was secretly or openly happy to see dead. Which made deciding whom, among them all, hated him just enough more to find him threatening at a different level. Enter Scotland Yard, and even a bit of romance.
The narration is good, the story was a great cerebral puzzle, a Who-dunnit in the truest sense, and I enjoyed listening to every minute of it.

A good listen to a comfortable story
This is an old-fashioned whodunit. The characters are as known to the listener as one's own parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable listen. Expertly narrated with quite well defined voices for each character. Perfect to recommend to your aging parents or grandparents. No sex, bad words, or other distasteful things.

great story, with bad narration
This Georgette Heyer novel was a great mystery, in the tradition of the Golden Days of Detective Fiction (along with other classic novelists like Agatha Christie). Unfortunately the narrator was not great......while in some ways she allowed me to create great visuals in my brain for each character with her performance, in other ways her narration made listening very difficult. She seemed to hyper-enunciate every word, making things stilted and slow.
I think my next Georgette Heyer mystery will be in print.

Good classic mystery
Heyer isn't quite in the same league as Christie and Sayers, but she does write well plotted, clever mysteries that are still worth the read. Her characters are a bit over the top here, but still interesting and witty and worth getting to know.
The mystery itself is neither too obscure nor too simplistic. I figured out a key part, but not the actual killer until right at the end (about the same time her detective did). As a long time mystery reader, that is always a plus for me.
The romance (and Heyer cannot resist tossing in a little romance) is silly, but unobtrusive to the story.
I think the narrator does a fine job. She isn't perfection, but I was never dropped out of the story and never had problems knowing who was speaking, so I was happy with it.
