Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

'I've written three books and our deal is over.' That's what reluctant author Anthony Horowitz tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne in an awkward meeting. The truth is that Anthony has got other things on his mind.

His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the famous Vaudeville theatre in Shoreditch. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night.

The play is not enjoyed by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Harriet Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing. The next day, Throsby is stabbed in the heart with an ornamental dagger, which, it turns out, belongs to Anthony, and which has his fingerprints all over it.

Anthony is arrested by an old enemy...Detective Inspector Cara Grunshaw. She's still smarting from her failure to solve the case described in the second Hawthorne adventure: The Sentence Is Death. She blames Anthony for her failure. And now she's out for revenge.

Thrown into prison and brutally interrogated, Anthony is the prime suspect in Throsby's murder, and as a second theatre critic is found to have died in mysterious circumstances, the net closes in. Ever more desperate, he realizes that only one man can help him.

But will Hawthorne take the call?

"Murder and cigarettes."

Contracted to write three Hawthorne novels, and all three now either published or planned, Anthony Horowitz rejects the ex policeman's request that he wrote a fourth. He's looking forward to making up his own mysteries, plus he has a play about to open at the Vaudeville, and he wants to savour his connection with the theatre.
But suddenly he needs Hawthorne, the only person who can really help him. Let's hope that a new contract with Penguin will bring a further three Hawthorne and Horowitz stories.

Intriguing, exciting, great writing and equally excellent performance by Tory Kinnear, standing in as Anthony in the narration.enjoy
This is such a fun who-dun-it series, and A Twist of the Knife is also a stand alone. But for readers fortunate enough not yet to have read the first three books, get those too, get reading - and enjoy.

Brilliant improvisation,

Excellent read, the story roles with sardonic dry wit and great characterisations. Rory Kinnear is a genius.

Love these books

Agatha Christie in a contemporary setting, and just as entertaining and engaging… Anthony Horowitz cleverly makes himself the main attention of this story even moreso than the previous stories, somehow without making himself overly important. There’s no pomposity in this, as he plays Watson to Hawthorn’s Holmes, and that works surprisingly well because the story and writing is so engaging, and so pacy, that you don’t get long enough to have any doubts or raise any questions. The narration is simply superb. Can’t wait for the next one….

Bloody Brilliant

I ADORE this series. I was so excited when I saw that AH had already written a other one! The stories are engaging, intelligent and so witty. The narration has to be one of my favourite of the 100s of audiobooks I’ve listened to, each character is distinctive and sometimes I’m genuinely surprised it’s just one narrator. BRING ON THE NEXT ONE!!

Love this series. Rory Kinnear’s narration is amazing. I look forward to the next one although I become very anti-social once I start listening!

Hawthorn does it again

Another excellently crafted murder mystery, awash with misdirection and abundant clues. Rory Kinnear's narration is superb as usual. Listeners to the previous books in the series will not be disappointed.

Well crafted and a joy to read

Such a clever book, best in the series yet!
well constructed but easy to read. Gently develops the Hawthorne character whilst laying the details of this books mystery. An amazing mix of fact and fiction with Anthony being in the book. Loved it!
