Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

'I've written three books and our deal is over.' That's what reluctant author Anthony Horowitz tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne in an awkward meeting. The truth is that Anthony has got other things on his mind.

His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the famous Vaudeville theatre in Shoreditch. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night.

The play is not enjoyed by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Harriet Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing. The next day, Throsby is stabbed in the heart with an ornamental dagger, which, it turns out, belongs to Anthony, and which has his fingerprints all over it.

Anthony is arrested by an old enemy...Detective Inspector Cara Grunshaw. She's still smarting from her failure to solve the case described in the second Hawthorne adventure: The Sentence Is Death. She blames Anthony for her failure. And now she's out for revenge.

Thrown into prison and brutally interrogated, Anthony is the prime suspect in Throsby's murder, and as a second theatre critic is found to have died in mysterious circumstances, the net closes in. Ever more desperate, he realizes that only one man can help him.

But will Hawthorne take the call?

excellent, as always

sorry in advance for the lack of capital letters in this review - I'm voice typing it and it doesn't always capitalise the beginnings of sentences! shock, horror.

I adore this series. Anthony Horowitz rights with such pace, humour and intelligence. the developing relationship between Anthony and detective Hawthorne is a delight to behold and we are at the point in the series now where recurring jokes are welcome - Hawthornes dismissive, casually insulting treatment of Anthony just makes me warm to the author even more.

I'm certain this question has been asked from the very beginning but I do wonder - how much of the events in the book are real? I could dive in to read it or something to read the general consensus but I think I'll enjoy coming to my own conclusions more. in the word is murder, book one, I believed it was entirely factual until about 2/3 of the way through. in books 2 and 3 I smiled to myself every time I asked the question again - is this really real??? I concluded that it's probably got details based on fact but that much of the plot is fictional... to my delight, this book made me doubt that conclusion once again!

if I was forced to compare this series to food I would compare it to a Colin the Caterpillar cake from marks and Spencer's- it's very moorish, fun, but classy.

Love this series .. at last a quality thriller!

Oh my goodness I seem to have been wading through so many simply unlistenable audio books these days that this was just such an amazing treat.

I love Anthony Horowitz and his polished professional work which is just such a pleasure to listen to, with Magpie Murders as one of my all time Audible faves - just so very good!

I think this, Book 4 of the Hawthorn series is perhaps my least favourite, maybe as the genius concept of writing himself into the book is now becoming a bit easier to take for grated or perhaps it was because he was in the centre of the action instead of more of an onlooker.

Maybe it was because there was a brief mention of a couple of characters having been supposedly cruel to animals as children ... indeed that may have even been a red herring but I had to flip out my earbuds as did not want to hear if there were further details ...... also rather casual treatment of chocolate Lab Lucky who was allowed off the lead at night on the London streets in order for "Anthony" to try and escape danger. Any true animal lover knows when one is with one's dog and feel like you are in danger rather than hope for your dog to protect you, instead protecting your dog becomes your number one priority! So I am afraid, rightly or wrongly, even in this lighthearted setting, this has classified Mr Horrowitz as a sub par (perhaps only fictional) dog owner. Tsk, tsk tsk!

Apart from my particular bete noir being prodded, I really loved this book, looks like there are more in the pipeline and I shall be super onboard for every single one as even though this one may not have been my favourite in the series it was still a fabulous and amusing adventure.

As usual I was hoodwinked, misguided and totally fooled when it came to unravelling this beautifully woven plot with its many twists, turns, blind alleys and red herrings and I felt as exhilarated as if I had come in from a joyous cross country run when all the intricacies of this skilfully plotted murder was revealed.

Loved also the fascinating insight into an author's life and all the light hearted and amusing commentary plus all the intrigue of the ever developing mystery surrounding the enigmatic Hawthorne.

As usual, narration was fabulous for me and i really do believe this is the voice of Mr Horrowitz I am listening to, as such is its authenticity and charm for me.

Hats off for this masterful story telling - if only all audiobooks were this wonderfully entertaining and enjoyable.

Please please please another one soon ... but not before the next in the Magpie Murders series.

One happy listener ... for once!

Narration far too mannered

I've sadly had to give up on this book and will read it it instead. Rory Kinnear is a wonderful actor who I greatly admire but he makes a hash of this book speaking in an exaggerated gruff voice at times that is painful to hear. He makes the detective into a caricature that spoils what will probably be a good story. Great pity.

Didn't want it to end!

I couldn't wait to hear the next instalment of the Horowitz/Hawthorn adventures and Twist of the Knive did not disappoint. Exquisitely performed by Rory Kinnear who really breathes life into the characters, especially Jordan. Lastly - thank you Mr Horowitz for penning another success and being so self-deprecating and making me laugh.

Great modern whodunit!

I adore the blurring of the lines of the 4th wall he does in this series, hugely recommended

"Murder and cigarettes."

Contracted to write three Hawthorne novels, and all three now either published or planned, Anthony Horowitz rejects the ex policeman's request that he wrote a fourth. He's looking forward to making up his own mysteries, plus he has a play about to open at the Vaudeville, and he wants to savour his connection with the theatre.
But suddenly he needs Hawthorne, the only person who can really help him. Let's hope that a new contract with Penguin will bring a further three Hawthorne and Horowitz stories.

Intriguing, exciting, great writing and equally excellent performance by Tory Kinnear, standing in as Anthony in the narration.enjoy
This is such a fun who-dun-it series, and A Twist of the Knife is also a stand alone. But for readers fortunate enough not yet to have read the first three books, get those too, get reading - and enjoy.

Excellent -Brilliant

Anthony Horowitz never fails in my opinion, love his stories and have followed all the Detective Hawthorne murder mysteries
had this on my pre-order list and listened virtually in one go, yes, it’s that good, I have to add the narration(most important) by Rory Kinnear is an added bonus I recommend this, all the clues has you listen to the story are all there it’s just up to the listener to try and put them together.
