Summary

Book three of the Ciaphas Cain series.

An old rival, infighting with fellow Astra Militarum regiments and the small matter of a cult devoted to the Chaos God Slaanesh derail Commissar Cain's hope for a quiet and uneventful mission.

Ciaphas Cain's latest mission takes him and his Valhallan regiment to the planet of Adumbria to defend against an approaching Chaos invasion. However, infighting with fellow Imperial Guard regiments from the world of Tallarn, commanded by an old 'friend' of Cain's from the Schola Progenium and the uprising of a sinister cult on the planet puts paid to any hopes of an easy life.

Amazing

The Commissar Cain books are incredible and provide an amazing humour in the grim dark of the far future. Well worth listening to them all and very well performed all around. Kudos to Stephen Perring for representing the saltiest commissar in all the Galaxy.

Another great piece of work!

The dynamic performance between each vocal performer is the best blend Ibhave ever come across. The characters just keep growing from novel to novel. I have laughed out loud to this one a couple of times. Great work thank you!

Definitely worth it

I’ve read/listened to all of the Cain books and this one is as fantastic as the rest. You will need to look past the poor editing in a few places (Audible should face a firing squad for allowing that), but the story makes it worth it. This is Cain at his absolute best! Review date Apr 22.

Another excellent book from the series

Again, a great book. The story and the performances are excellent, probably one of the best series in the 40K universe.

Great story and performance, poor editing

I have really enjoyed listening to the Ciaphas Cain series, and the performances of the voice actors is fantastic, really helping you to become immersed.

My only real criticism of this story (compared to the earlier books) is the lack of editing. There are at least 5 or 6 occasions in the book where actors made mistakes and reread their lines which have not been edited out. It’s a shame because it doesn’t show Warhammer 40k in its best light, giving the casual listener the impression that the Black Library is an amateur outfit as opposed to the professional and immersive appearance that the books, games and tabletop have always had.

Majestic

Caiaphas Cain is easily one of the best characters in the 40k universe. The book is filled with interesting and well written characters, the story it self is solid and engaging.
