About this listen

Book three of the Ciaphas Cain series.

An old rival, infighting with fellow Astra Militarum regiments and the small matter of a cult devoted to the Chaos God Slaanesh derail Commissar Cain's hope for a quiet and uneventful mission.

Ciaphas Cain's latest mission takes him and his Valhallan regiment to the planet of Adumbria to defend against an approaching Chaos invasion. However, infighting with fellow Imperial Guard regiments from the world of Tallarn, commanded by an old 'friend' of Cain's from the Schola Progenium and the uprising of a sinister cult on the planet puts paid to any hopes of an easy life.

I have really enjoyed listening to the Ciaphas Cain series, and the performances of the voice actors is fantastic, really helping you to become immersed.

My only real criticism of this story (compared to the earlier books) is the lack of editing. There are at least 5 or 6 occasions in the book where actors made mistakes and reread their lines which have not been edited out. It’s a shame because it doesn’t show Warhammer 40k in its best light, giving the casual listener the impression that the Black Library is an amateur outfit as opposed to the professional and immersive appearance that the books, games and tabletop have always had.

Great story and performance, poor editing

The narration of this is spot on. Penelope Rawlins and Victoria Gregory do an excellent job with Amberley Vail and Jenit Sulla respectively.

Brilliant cast

Excellent as expected, though as this is the third Cain novel and I actually have read all of them in book, I am happy to say that it is only Narration that is different and once again Excellent.

As to be expected
