Summary
Book three of the Ciaphas Cain series.
An old rival, infighting with fellow Astra Militarum regiments and the small matter of a cult devoted to the Chaos God Slaanesh derail Commissar Cain's hope for a quiet and uneventful mission.
Ciaphas Cain's latest mission takes him and his Valhallan regiment to the planet of Adumbria to defend against an approaching Chaos invasion. However, infighting with fellow Imperial Guard regiments from the world of Tallarn, commanded by an old 'friend' of Cain's from the Schola Progenium and the uprising of a sinister cult on the planet puts paid to any hopes of an easy life.

Great story and performance, poor editing
I have really enjoyed listening to the Ciaphas Cain series, and the performances of the voice actors is fantastic, really helping you to become immersed.
My only real criticism of this story (compared to the earlier books) is the lack of editing. There are at least 5 or 6 occasions in the book where actors made mistakes and reread their lines which have not been edited out. It’s a shame because it doesn’t show Warhammer 40k in its best light, giving the casual listener the impression that the Black Library is an amateur outfit as opposed to the professional and immersive appearance that the books, games and tabletop have always had.

great story, audio edit needs fixing
another excellent adventure from Cain. a few editing errors, where the reader restarts a sentence 2 or 3 times, also where one reader begins over another. these are hopefully fixed soon.

I can't imagine any other voice for Cain
I very much enjoy the Cain Books, having read them all multiple times. So I was pleased when I discovered the Cain Audiobook series and I cannot imagine any other voice for Cain than the on Stephen Perring has given him. The book itself is enjoyable as always, though the thing stopping me giving full marks across the board are some minor recording issues, where it seems points were missed by the editor or the quality of the other narrators dips. Still despite these issue which are minor I enjoyed Cain taking every chance to mess with Beige while stumbling into greater heroic accolades. Here's looking forward to the next book which is my favourite in the series

great book, poorly edited.
I am a huge fan of the cain books. I have them all in physical copy. I had been waiting for this one to come out on audible but my excitement has been marred by some sloppy editing.
Gaps between speech sometimes don't happen, sometimes characters almost speak over each other and one of the main narrators mistakes was not edited out. this has not ruined the book, but it has made it feel like a rushed job to get it out and not giving the narrators, story and the series as a whole, the respect it deserves.

Narrator’s audio outtakes literally left in
Good book but there are a few places where you can hear the narrator mess up on his lines a few times and try again. Really jarring and kind of broke the immersion so hopefully they push an update to fix this.
Besides that though, this is classic Ciaphas Cain. My one complaint about the story is it kinda makes chaos marines seem a bit easier to kill than one would expect but that’s just a minor nitpick.

Some issues fixed, some new ones to resolve
I like how they went back and added additional monologues into the audiobook - I imagine these were in the original book but didn’t make first cut for some reason. The narrator’s outtake that the original version of the audiobook had left in has been removed, but there’s a new problem in that starting somewhere between chapters six and seven the actual audiobook chapters desynchronize with where they’re supposed to be in the book, so you’ve got a chapter starting in the middle of a sentence instead of the narrator saying ‘Chapter whatever’. Also, the point where Inquisitor Veil’s monologue overlaps with another person’s monologue is still present. All in all, better, but they’ve added a problem that wasn’t there before, so still have a ways to go.
