Summary

Book three of the Ciaphas Cain series.

An old rival, infighting with fellow Astra Militarum regiments and the small matter of a cult devoted to the Chaos God Slaanesh derail Commissar Cain's hope for a quiet and uneventful mission.

Ciaphas Cain's latest mission takes him and his Valhallan regiment to the planet of Adumbria to defend against an approaching Chaos invasion. However, infighting with fellow Imperial Guard regiments from the world of Tallarn, commanded by an old 'friend' of Cain's from the Schola Progenium and the uprising of a sinister cult on the planet puts paid to any hopes of an easy life.

great story, audio edit needs fixing

another excellent adventure from Cain. a few editing errors, where the reader restarts a sentence 2 or 3 times, also where one reader begins over another. these are hopefully fixed soon.

still a brilliant audiobook, highly recommended

Ace story, missing a few chapters!

As above, near an hour of the story is missing! Fortunately I'd read it before but it's missing important stuff :(

Skipping

A great, funny story.
but I'm not sure if my download is corrupt or if some editing was missed, but at several points towards the end of the book, sentences started to repeat as if a retake wasnt cut properly.

Ciaphas and jurgen to the rescue

Without doubt the books detailing commissar cains “heroics” are a light in the dark that is the world of 40k, funny and sad at the same time, I can never get enough of Cain and Jurgen, the narration is superb, like others I have reservations regarding the editing but in no way did detract from my enjoyment of the book, more please and sooner rather than later

Excellent story

Excellent story, full of interesting and unique characters. The few errors (There's only two glaring ones) that slipped through QA only slightly detract from the experience.

Amazing

I always love this range of books and look forward to the next instalment. I fear the editors were a little absent minded with this otherwise great read as the voice actor made some mistakes and corrected them, however the editors left this in the recording.
Didn’t spoil the book/listen in any way though

I can't imagine any other voice for Cain

I very much enjoy the Cain Books, having read them all multiple times. So I was pleased when I discovered the Cain Audiobook series and I cannot imagine any other voice for Cain than the on Stephen Perring has given him. The book itself is enjoyable as always, though the thing stopping me giving full marks across the board are some minor recording issues, where it seems points were missed by the editor or the quality of the other narrators dips. Still despite these issue which are minor I enjoyed Cain taking every chance to mess with Beige while stumbling into greater heroic accolades. Here's looking forward to the next book which is my favourite in the series

Narrator’s audio outtakes literally left in

Good book but there are a few places where you can hear the narrator mess up on his lines a few times and try again. Really jarring and kind of broke the immersion so hopefully they push an update to fix this.

Besides that though, this is classic Ciaphas Cain. My one complaint about the story is it kinda makes chaos marines seem a bit easier to kill than one would expect but that’s just a minor nitpick.

Solid entry

More of the popcorn-munching goodness you expect of these books.
There is a short section where the editor didn't remove a few takes of a single line from the text, but I honestly didn't mind it.

Black Library needs better editing.

Once again, Sandy Mitchell writes a good story and the performance on the whole is great, but Black Library fails to remove a few false takes and stutters. This is most noticeable in newer productions and should be looked into, but does not detract overall except for pulling you out of the immersive flow of narration at good points.

good, but concerning

Like all Cain novels I was excited to see this had come out as I loved the series. it's another great addition to the legacy sandy Mitchell has built, though not entirely without faults. there are multiple points in the recording where the main voice actor for ciaphas cain stumbles and repeats himself several times. I at first thought this a playing error on my device until I listened to it again on a different one and it persisted. I honestly wonder how this made it into the final cut. additionally, I am wondering why other voice actors and actresses are only used during the editorial notes. if you are going to have a cast of multiple people it would be best to use them to their full advantage rather then give them snippets here and there.

Technical issues

Love this book and was really happy when I found it, but it seems unedited and as someone was playing around with the voice actors voices. Other than that loved it when it went smoothly

A real hero never believes his own legend.

In the 41st Millennium there is only war.
Ciaphas Cain is one of the most interesting characters in the Warhammer Universe. By his account a coward and a fake, but by his actions (and the meticulous study of his love interest Amberley) we see his observations are wrong.
A man that regularly risked his life to perform unparalleled act of heroism and sound leadership. A hilarious look at a Commissar loved by his troops and completely unaware he's actually good at his job... ...arguably the best.

Fun listen, despite performance.

Ah yes another fun Cain novel, really nice to see the mixed regiment is kicking butt still. The performance however had more then a few hiccups that should have been edited out, like andrew repeating the same sentence 4 times till he felt his tone was sufficient.
