This novel is rich, entertaining and thoughtful. The reader has a pleasant voice, pleasant enough to compensate for an English accent which doesn't at all fit the narrator (who, we are repeatedly told, has never lived or studied in England). However, the listening experience was seriously hampered by the reader's (and/or producer's) failures to research the correct pronunciations of Indian words. The biggest irritant was hearing 'Delhi' pronounced 'Dilli' by characters speaking English – a hypercorrection and a simple error given the largely English-speaking world in which the book is set. Saxena (the surname of several of the main characters) is not pronounced 'Sakseena'. Bangalore is not 'Bungalow'. 'Baba' is not 'Bubba'. 'Kayastha' is not 'Kayaasthaa'. (I could go on!) Even English words are consistently mispronounced: 'irrevocable', 'annals', 'Naipaulitis' (admitted a made-up word, but no one seems to have thought about what the word might mean!) A slip here and there can be ignored or forgiven. An error on nearly every page is hard to take. Indian books deserve better.

For anyone who has spent time in the Capital during the stinking winter and the swelter of summer, those who have cooled their feet in the grasses of Lodi Gardens or Humayans Tomb, or wandered Khan and Sundar Bazaars, this book will evoke memories. Read beautifully.
