Summary

Swashbuckling classic adventure, with an updated twist placing Milady in the role of narrator.

Young D'Artagnan arrives in Paris to join the King's elite guards but almost immediately finds he is duelling with some of the very men he has come to swear allegiance to - Porthos, Athos and Aramis, inseparable friends: the Three Musketeers.

Soon part of their close band, D'Artagnan's loyalty to his new allies puts him in the deadly path of Cardinal Richlieu's machinations. And when the young hero falls in love with the beautiful but inaccessible Constance, he finds himself in a world of murder, conspiracy and lies, with only the Musketeers to depend on.

Sex, Sex and more Sex.

Every now and again I insist on getting a "classic" story to listen to in the car with my 12 & 14 year old boys, so it's not all teen angst. I vaguely remembered The Three Musketeers being swashbuckling fun with some romance so bought this without really thinking about it. Oh My Word ... It starts with My Lady D'Winter naked in bed discussing how much she'd like more sex and basically carries on from there. Pretty much every character gets it off at some point, with sound effects. Don't get me wrong, it's very nicely done (kissy noises rather than porn, although there is some moaning) with lots of witty historical banter ("Madame you appear to be naked ...") but they are still DOING IT or talking about DOING IT. This is horribly embarrassing if you are 14, in the car with your mum, on the way to school (argh! noo! not again!!!) but hilarious if you are Mum. Add to that the scream effects of torture, a naked woman choking to death on a horse and various gurgling deaths of people with swords / daggers through various bits, and I would definitely but this down as a 12 plus rating (possibly a 15 if you are sensitive). The hilarious banter, cracking story line and crystal clear sound effects saved me luckily, and they are keen to find out what happened. I don't think we'll keep it though. More research needed next time!!

Fantastic dramatisation of this classic...

What a superb dramatisation of Alexandre Dumas' classic. A great story retold beautifully, with some fantastic acting alongside perfectly placed sound effects and music to really do justice to such a wonderful tale. On this occasion, the story is retold by Milady de Winter, providing a novel twist to the tale. I've really enjoyed Audible's dramatisations, and The Three Musketeers is truly an exceptional addition to the collection.

Delightfully silly -- just like the original

This dramatization of The Three Musketeers splendidly captures the childish exuberance of the original story -- everything about it is silly, but it's silly in an engaging and clever way. The script and acting do full justice to the pompous, bellicose lack of believability of the original musketeers. All the hammy smuttiness of the book is there, as prominent as a cardinal's staff (oo, err...) What's missing, perhaps, is the political intensity of the book -- it seems to be have been lost in the general swashbuckling and carousing. It's great fun, so long as you don't take any part of it seriously in any way. The music and sound effects are well done and appropriate. I don't know if this is a general change for Audible, but this production seems to be delivered in a higher bitrate than usual, and with some sense of stereo. Let's hope it's the start of a trend -- too many Audible presentations have been spoiled by poor fidelity audio delivery.

Exciting, engaging, amazing. What more can you say about this fantastic historical tale. Literally the cowboys of yester yesteryear (that's not a typo 😎).

Excellent dramatization

I was completely taken aback by the excellent quality of the Audible dramatization of this classic. It's one of the very best I have listened to. The different narrators, the background sounds all combine to provide an amazing listening experience that brings this classic book to life in an amazing way. Highly recommended.

More of the same please Audible!!!

A thoroughly enjoyable listen from start to finish. Great acting, music and sound effects. The narration helped steer the story along on a steady course all the way through. Above all else though, the beautifully written language and story formed by Dumas shines throughout. There are some real nuggets of writing in this jewel of a story, faithfully brought to life by this wonderful production. Top marks all round.

loved it

Loved it. There is great dept to all of the characters especially to D'Artagnan. His gobshite attitude and bumpling attempts to meet and become one of the Musketeers is particularly memorable. There aren't enough hours in the day to fit in the duels he's challenged to. My favourite scene I shall go to war for you. I shall set England against France. I'll stir up Hugenots I shall set the British navy sailing. I'll see canons blazing. Why? Politics? No, because every inch of France I seize will bring me closer to you. Without a need for retreat. I shall be a conqueror. Like a thief in the night. I will put England and France like they haven't been since Agincourt. And when they declare me a hero I will turn politely away and survey my truer territory. And that territory will be this nakedness here.* George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham in Alexandre Dumas The Three Musketeers as adapted by Marty Ross for Audible (Ch4 18.40 ) *Roughly transcribed. May contain slight errors and butchered punctuation.

Awesome adaption of a classic

Where do I start??? Like most I knew of the three musketeers and D'artagnan, mostly from the old Gene Kelly movie (1948), which is worth a watch by the way. Was always interested in reading the novel but have never got round to it. So gave this a try and so glad I listened. It's never dull, has action and romance, tragedy. So many things about it and delivered with ease and animation by the actors. Despite Madam De Winter being the villain, you almost can't help but feel pity for her. I won't spoil things for potential listeners but recommend giving this a go.

Superb !!

Masterful Performance from a Respectfully Dynamic Cast, allowing the listener too drift away into the Audio Ambience. Marvellously Delightful to Experience / Appreciate, Probably Not a Masterpiece though Just Lacking that Masterstroke Factor Unfortunately !!! I'd give it 7-8 out of 10 considering the actual impact the Players / Actors / Characters Had on Me at this Moment in Our Time !!! Pity it's been developed within a Prententiously Corrupt and Potentially Deluded System that's Completely up it's Self...HaHaHaHaHa Thank God for that Comrads or We Really Would Be Doomed !!!!!

Great Dramatization

It doesn’t mirror the original book perfectly but the voice acting was phenomenal and made for an extremely enjoyable listen. Truthfully, Dumas’ stories are full of plot elements that appeal to a variety of genres making them appealing to everyone once you get past the identification of his novels as “Classics”.

Classically entertaining

As I have never read the original novel, I thought when I chose this “book“ that it would be just that – the novel itself by Dumas. Instead, it was very much like a classic 1930s radio show, with very well trained voice actors playing all the characters. Overall, it was very well done, thoroughly entertaining, and held my attention all the while. Sometimes the voices were a bit similar to each other but one could follow the storyline quite well. I would recommend this presentation for anyone who likes entertainment in the noir style.

A cast instead of one narrator

what I like about this is they had different people read different parts. I don't mind one narrator but sometimes it can get confusing on who they're voicing.

Great Production Quality

The main thing that stood out for me in this audiobook is the high production Quality. The story itself was not all that bad for a classic.
