About this listen

From science fiction visionary Annalee Newitz comes The Terraformers, a sweeping, uplifting, and illuminating exploration of the future.

'Fascinating and readable in equal measure, The Terraformers will remake your mind like its cast remakes an entire planet' John Scalzi

Destry's life is dedicated to terraforming Sask-E. As part of the Environmental Rescue Team, she cares for the planet and its burgeoning eco-systems as her parents and their parents did before her.

But the bright, clean future they're building comes under threat when Destry discovers a city full of people that shouldn't exist, hidden inside a massive volcano.

As she uncovers more about their past, Destry begins to question the mission she's devoted her life to, and must make a choice that will reverberate through Sask-E's future for generations to come.

A science fiction epic for our times and a love letter to our future, The Terraformers will take you on a journey spanning thousands of years and exploring the triumphs, strife, and hope that find us wherever we make our home.

'The Terraformers is so engaging, you could almost miss the pyrotechnic worldbuilding and bone-deep intelligence. Newitz continues doing some of the best work in the field' James S. A. Corey

'A complete reimagining of the great galactic story of terraformers. Startling fun!' Kim Stanley Robinson

'Newitz always sees to the heart of complex systems and breaks them down with poetic ferocity' N. K. Jemisin

I really enjoyed this book, it has great characters and an interesting story that keeps you listening. There are some serious themes like slavery but done in a lighter sci fi setting which makes it easier to deal with and absorb. Overall the story is fun and I really rooted for my favourites and was fascinated by all the different people the author had created.

Great narrator and fun sound effects throughout.

Interesting and compelling story

Didactic. Now added to my vocabulary, so I can be thanful for that. Being instructed on, for example, the ideal vegan smoothie, does not make for a compelling narrative.

What stood out most? Not wanting to continue.

I am so glad that I listened to this on Audible because it made it a totally unique experience in which you get to hear “singing trains”. Not to be missed.

Wonderful book uniquely enhanced by sound effects

Somehow lately I've been finding myself reading a lot of books about post-humans (e.g. Linda Nagata's Inverted Frontier or Marina Lostetter's Noumenon), and each book/series offers something new and cool, and so does this one. While the plot of the book is not revolutionary, it's life is in its cast of characters. I couldn't help but like each of them and get invested in each story. It's also interesting to see how all the various types of people could coexist peacefully, if only this actually happened in reality... Because of the positive outlook of the book, people eventually overcoming greed and disasters by peaceful cooperation, I would count this book as solarpunk. The book is indeed rather light on science/tech, and more a story or history of people, but I still liked it (even though I normally prefer hard sci fi).

I liked it!

I really wanted to enjoy this but a combination of factors has me walking away. 1) The narrator using childish, Disney style voicing for many of the characters 2) rather preachy narrative. It's a pity because the book opens really strongly introducing the world building concepts well and the protagonist in a tense action situation.. dang!

Started out promising and rapidly faded
