Summary

The Terracotta Dog, the second audiobook in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series, opens with a mysterious tête-à-tête with a mafioso, some inexplicably abandoned loot from a supermarket heist and some dying words that lead Inspector Montalbano to a secret grotto in a mountain cave where two young lovers, dead 50 years and still embracing, are watched over by a life-size terracotta dog. Montalbano's passion to solve this old crime takes him, heedless of personal danger, on a journey through the island's past and into a family's dark heart amid the horrors of World War II.

Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Salvo Montalbano has garnered millions of fans worldwide with his sardonic, engaging take on Sicilian small-town life and his genius for deciphering the most enigmatic of crimes.

The Terracotta Dog is followed by the third title in this satirical and humorous series, The Snack Thief.

Surprising

I have read quite a few Montalbano books, seen others on tv and heard some tbks. I was aware from an Italian speaking friend that the tv show's subtitles did not reflect the actual dialogue. I was not really expecting the crude language of this translation. Not normally prudish but I prefer my Salvo to be a bit more sanitised. However one thing that I learnt was how Catarella got his job. Don't think I will get any other Montalbano Audible books. There's plenty of other things I can listen to.

Some characters bit annoying, but story got going

Characters are a bit cliched, but story got going in second half. Enjoyed the narrator.

What a joy.

Even though I know most of these stories very well, I enjoyed this very much. The story is great, the narrator super, it was most uplifting. I shall certainly be collecting more. The author manages to tell a story with love, sex, death, violence, mystery and strong language without any gratuitous intent,
