Summary

Gracie Burton is a grandmother living quietly in Devon. She has rarely left the village over the past 40 years. Her daughter, Carina, is immensely high-powered, with her own fast-paced business in London. She has very little time for her 17-year-old daughter, Anastasia, away at boarding school, and even less time for her ageing mother. In many ways, the three of them barely know each other.

Then Gracie stumbles upon an advertisement for a weeklong cookery course in the heart of the Tuscan countryside. She cannot resist and ploughs her life savings into the trip. Carina and Anastasia accompany her. They have no idea why Gracie has been drawn to this venture. They have no sense of her past; she has never spoken about it. They have no idea that Gracie is harbouring the secret of an extraordinary life that preceded them....

Brilliant from start to finish!

I always enjoy reading Santa Montefiore books and this is no exception!Story is full of plot and interest and found the time lapse of stories blended beautifully. Also loved the added comic touch with the character of Flappy too!
Rachel Adkins has to be the best narrator of stories by far ... fabulous timing , accents and emphasis- brilliant from start to finish!
Highly recommended !

Wonderful - Gracie’s Story

Oh what a lovely story read beautifully by Rachel Atkins.. As I listened, with my eyes closed, I felt that I was there in that beautiful area of Italy. From the beginning of Gracie’s story, to the lovely ending, I found it hard to stop listening. Loved it!

Average & tiresome

Personally, I found this books so loaded with stereotypes, that it was tedious, overly fantastical. However, I did listen to it
so it must have held something for me.

Summer listening

I couldn't stop listening to this book and Santa Montefiore is a gifted story teller who weaves her love of the Tuscany landscape into her book. I felt I knew the characters and the book deserves a sequel

Easy read

This is a light hearted book, it’s a good family saga and the story was sweet but stayed (just about) the right side of saccharine. I actually enjoyed the intermittent parts set back in the UK with the ladies book club the most - they were very funny. I live in a small village where ladies of a certain age are part of an art group - I swear that one of them in particular could have been the author’s inspiration for Flappy Scott-Boothe!!
I do like Rachael Atkins and give her 5 stars when she narrates in British accents, however, having listened to previous attempts and now this one, it seems that she’s awful at any others!! Regardless of the age or gender of the character, she seems to have one blanket voice for anyone from any country in Europe - which is slow, croaky and sounds oddly Mexican!! Her American accent is just as bad. Over all though, I still enjoyed the book and would recommend it if you’re in the mood for an easy read.
