A completely addictive psychological thriller

‘If you’re listening to this, I’ve been murdered.’

Eve is clearing her father’s house when she finds an old cassette player and a box of tapes. Though grieving, she smiles at the spark of nostalgia.

One tape is labelled ‘Eve’–in her mother, Angela’s, scrawled handwriting. She disappeared for good more than ten years ago.

The tape whirrs. A voice crackles. ‘My name is Angela’. Tears fill Eve’s eyes at the familiar voice–at the thought her mother recorded this message just for her. But the next words make her heart pound.

‘If they say I’m missing, I’m not. If you’re listening to this, I’ve been murdered.’

Desperate for answers, Eve has no one left to ask–only a box of tapes that could lead to the truth. But the more she listens, the more she realises she can never go to the police…

Because Eve’s mother had her own secrets. But what if her killer is still out there? And what if Eve is next?

An absolutely gripping psychological thriller! Anyone who loves Shari Lapena, John Marrs or Lisa Jewell will be totally addicted.

A great mystery that kept me intrigued and guessing. I remember audio cassettes, so that added an element of nostalgia and interest. Would recommend.

Great mystery

This novel is somewhere between The Five, a Maeve Kerrigan and a standalone story about a woman.

If my description makes it sound complicated, it really isn’t.
Told mainly from the perspective of one recently bereaved woman, she is flawed but an everywoman.
The story uses a clue, the tapes, which serve as a true-crime style plot device. It switches between same day and recent history.
Additionally, characters are introduced in an order.
Woven together, the strands make for an intriguing and very listenable novel.

Good story, told well.

I loved this fast paced thriller about a woman who finds a box of tapes recorded by her mother before she disappeared. One of the tapes suggests she thought she was going to be murdered. What a great premise! There is so much tension and a feeling of imminent danger as Eve tries to discover what happened all those years ago. It is an easy read with plenty of twists. It is full of family secrets and lies and the ending was unexpected.

I enjoyed the narration by Melanie Crawley and Shaheen Khan.

Excellent

I’m not sure how to put this, but I felt that nothing really happened in this book. Certainly no real ‘twist’ as others have purported. I think I’ve been spoilt by other, better writers and now stories like this one just don’t appear all that entertaining. But if you enjoy gentle, simple and straightforward tales with no twists, turns and ‘gasp out loud’ moments then you’ll like this.
I’ll be giving this author a swerve.

A bit boring
