About this listen

A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING MATT DAMON, JUDE LAW AND GWYNETH PALTROW

One of the BBC's 100 Novels that shaped our world.

'An outstanding thriller which has deservedly become a classic' THE TIMES

'Ripley - amoral, hedonistic and charming - is a genuinely original creation' DAILY TELEGRAPH

'I'm a huge Highsmith fan. If there's one book I wish I'd written, it's The Talented Mr Ripley' SARAH WATERS

ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL CRIME NOVELS EVER WRITTEN

Tom Ripley travels to Italy with a commission to coax a prodigal young American back to his wealthy father. But Ripley finds himself very fond of Dickie Greenleaf. He wants to be like him - exactly like him. Suave, agreeable and utterly amoral, Ripley will stop at nothing to accomplish his goal.

The Talented Mr. Ripley serves as an unforgettable introduction to this smooth confident man, whose talent for murder and self-invention is chronicled in four subsequent Ripley novels.

Critic reviews

"Precisely plotted, stylishly written, and kept alert by an icy wit. Streets ahead of the conventional thriller: a cool little classic of its kind." (Evening Standard)

Having seen the film a few years ago and remembering nothing much, except that I enjoyed it, I thought I'd refresh my memory with this. It's in turns cringey, clever and tense, and best of all, I didn't guess the ending. In fact, the ending was so surprising that I had to rewind to make sure I hadn't got the wrong end of the stick! I can't remember the end of the film (it's an age thing) but I'm sure it wasn't this. Thomas Ripley is so vividly drawn that I found myself cringeing on his behalf at the start and then listening with mouth hanging open as his character develops. The descriptions of Venice and Rome are so vivid that I felt I'd been there myself. The narration is just right, bringing all the characters to life. The tension builds throughout the second half of the book and by the end I was totally sleep deprived. I couldn't switch it off. Highly recommended.

David's narration really brings this story to life. a fantastic book to bring on a travel to Italy

Nicely Narrated

Tom Ripley is a sympathetic villlain who the reader identifies with against his better judgement. Also, the narrator's voice and reading style on this production could not be bettered, in my view

Very Entertaining

I struggled with the narrator and his accents but overall a fantastic book. Didn't quite give me the need to check out the others in the series but I enjoyed the story.

What a wonderful classic - Highsmith is as relevant today as she was so many years ago. Machiavellian and intriguing - superb book and great movie too.
