Critic reviews

"Ripley, amoral, hedonistic, and charming, is a genuinely original creation." ( Daily Telegraph)
"Precisely plotted, stylishly written, and kept alert by an icy wit. Streets ahead of the conventional thriller: a cool little classic of its kind." ( Evening Standard)

A real page turner

Very entertaining, the time just flew by.
It was very interesting seeing the world through the eyes of Tom Ripley. I disposed on one level but also quite liked him on another.
It was such a good listen I may now check out the next Ripley book.

Interesting

Enjoyed the story but do have some mixed feelings as I struggled to empathise with Mr Ripley most of the time, but I suppose that's the whole point of the book.
The narration is excellent and really made the story come alive.

Tense and Unpredictable

Having seen the film a few years ago and remembering nothing much, except that I enjoyed it, I thought I'd refresh my memory with this. It's in turns cringey, clever and tense, and best of all, I didn't guess the ending. In fact, the ending was so surprising that I had to rewind to make sure I hadn't got the wrong end of the stick! I can't remember the end of the film (it's an age thing) but I'm sure it wasn't this. Thomas Ripley is so vividly drawn that I found myself cringeing on his behalf at the start and then listening with mouth hanging open as his character develops. The descriptions of Venice and Rome are so vivid that I felt I'd been there myself. The narration is just right, bringing all the characters to life. The tension builds throughout the second half of the book and by the end I was totally sleep deprived. I couldn't switch it off. Highly recommended.

Very pleasant and well read

What did you like most about The Talented Mr Ripley?

T Ripley is very different to one in the movie. I was drawn to the book by the movie. So glad there is an audiobook for this. A must read or listen to.

What about David Menkin’s performance did you like?

Love his Italian accent. Kept my attention for all eight hours.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't want it to end. Will search for the next episode of T Ripley.

Timeless portrait of a ruthless sociopath

Breathless from start to finish. You'll love this extraordinary story a about a man, who's got to be one of the most warped in the whole of fiction, who'll stop at nothing to get what he wants.

A classic!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely. Patricia Highsmith writes well. The story is well plotted, fast moving and amazingly she manages to make the reader want Tom Ripley to succeed even though he is a psychopath!

What does David Menkin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He brings it to life so it is more like watching a film than reading.

Any additional comments?

I now want to read more books by Patricia Highsmith.

Intense

What did you like most about The Talented Mr Ripley?

Once it gets going, it stays going.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Edge of my seat.

Any additional comments?

In addition to a good thriller, its a compelling set up of Ripley as a character. Also, its a really evocative snapshot of 1950s wealthy/expat/lost-youth/Italian-riviera life. Beautiful like the Sun Also Rises or Great Gatsby.

Very Entertaining

Tom Ripley is a sympathetic villlain who the reader identifies with against his better judgement. Also, the narrator's voice and reading style on this production could not be bettered, in my view

Fantastic

Got to be one of the top 5 books ever - great narration, twisting plot, couldn't turn it off...
