Summary
A man called Milton walks into town....
On the run from his own demons, John Milton treks through the Michigan wilderness into the town of Truth. He's not looking for trouble, but trouble's looking for him. He finds himself up against a small-town cop who has no idea with whom he is dealing and no idea how dangerous he is.
But Milton is double crossed and badly injured. Unarmed and alone, he flees into the remote Porcupine Mountains with a posse on his tail. His enemies thought they could hunt him down. That was a mistake, and, where Milton is concerned, one mistake is all you get.
From best-selling author Mark Dawson (the John Milton and Beatrix Rose series), The Sword of God is the fifth in the acclaimed series of thrillers that listeners love. Mark Dawson has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, The Art of Falling Apart and Subpoena Colada have been published in multiple languages.

another good listen
Would you listen to The Sword of God again? Why?
I never mind listening to books again because things drop into place the 2nd time round that you missed the significance of at the first listening
Who was your favorite character and why?
well John Milton of course... even though you wouldn't want to cross him...
What does David Thorpe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I think he is one of the best narrators for this genre. He sounds like an ex squaddie, and I can visualise all the characters he does. You never get them mixed up.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
John Milton returns
Any additional comments?
I know these books are somewhat formulaic, but I still enjoy them.

Can't get enough of this fantastic series..
The John Milton Series just keeps on delivering! The Sword Of God is the fifth instalment, and a really enjoyable tale with Milton the subject of a hunt in the Michigan wilderness. Having agreed to help a young lady locate her brother, Milton soon stumbles across a much bigger plot, that puts many lives in danger. Badly injured, Milton needs to keep the hunting party off his back, whilst trying to put together the clues as to what his opponent's objectives are.
Superbly narrated by David Thorpe once again.
Highly recommended.

I'm Over John Milton
What will your next listen be?
The Power and patiently awaiting the next Department Q.
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I now know how to light a fire in the rain.
Any additional comments?
I started off enjoying this series but by Book 5, John Milton has outstayed his welcome. It feels like the author read an outdoor survival guide and transcribed it word for word into this novel.
If the extraneous narrative was removed, this book would be one quarter of the size.
Farewell John Milton. It was nice knowing you for a while but we’re done.

Downward Slide?
I quite enjoyed the first few books in the series. A kind of bad Jack Reacher turns good kind of anti hero with an interesting past and uncertain future. If these continue and improve there will be a good series to enjoy. Sadly this latest installment, while good in parts, reads like a pitch to Hollywood for a terrible movie. Unlikely heroics, two dimensional bad guys and silly feats of superhuman endurance, you know the kind of nonsense movies are stuffed with today. Let's hope things improve.

Good, if you like this sort of thing
After the variation provided by "Ghosts" this is a reversion to the standard John Milton formula: anguished ex-soldier with a heart of gold but capable of extreme violence arrives in town, meets damsel in distress and proceeds to solve her problem with hands and various weapons. It's good if you like that sort of thing.
The AA theme that runs through the first four books is largely absent from this one.
David Thorpe does another great job with the narration.

Now This is Good
I have listened to the first 4 in the series, I almost stopped after the first but thought the story line had promise to tried the second which was an improvement but still the series and author were struggling. I was seeing improvement so went on and used a credit for the third book, again more improvement. The forth was well done and brought new light and space to the story line. And then this book - it completely hit the mark. Good characters and good character development. Lots of action (even if it is unreal). Yes it is a bit Jack Reacherish but there are significant differences to the character and writing. Well worth the credit and my perseverance. I look forward to more stories of John Milton's adventures.

Cartoonish, Clichéd, Poorly Written Rehashed Plot
I, in some sort of attempt to allow Dawson to mature as a writer, lumbered through 5 of his 'books'. Along with hearing the repeated use of hackneyed cliches ('chicken lips!), these books have the sound and feel of cartoon plots. There is no flow to the stories as if the parts were taken off a shelf in an elementary writing class.
They are flatter than 'chicken lips' and any tension is nonexistent.
Save your credits.

UGH - Dawson's Writing Boring Polemics.
March of the monotonous! 3 STARS!!?? Why?
This Brit author knows how to spot the world's real terrorists. You thought maybe in the midst of AL-Qeada, ISIS, or perhaps, Taliban? Uh, nope. So how about Boko Haram, Al Shabab, or the North Korean Government? Again... nope, nope and nope. Dawson's 'hero' John Milton can spot them if they work for small American town sheriffs and quote the Old Testament. In fact, the slightest whiff of Republican scent's enough to tighten Milton's trigger finger.
Yep, Dawson knows that fat, stupid, and stereotypically evil white supremacists fill squad cars and offices in every rural US community. all tensed to wield their 'Sword of God'. You're safer to sleep unarmed in the Congo bush, the streets of Mosul, or San Pedro Sula, Honduras than to bristle with weapons into any South-Western U.S. town with a population less than say, 10,000.
Advice: There's no need to even hear the noisy first chapter of 'Sword of God' if you've listened to the last chapter of "Saint Death" or the first chapter of "The Driver". Absent minor differences, 'Sword of Death' simply (and I mean SIMPLY) reprises each of them.
And absent the existential threat of "The Group" dangling over Miltion's head like another legendary sword... Well this entire book's like a bottle of seltzer whose lid's been popped for a couple of months.
And then there's David Thorpe's increasingly BAD American accents.
It's one thing for Dawson-through-Thorpe's lips to endlessly bash Britain, after all his dialect allows some cred. But I'd rather get my American bashing from CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, the NYT or the Washington Post. NPR may be passing the same anti Western-Civ gas as the BBC, but it gets its mouth-music right - y'know?
Perhaps in future books Mr. Dawson will leave my USA to find some other culture to despise. After listening to five of his John Milton polemics... I'll probably never know. Goodby John Milton and God speed. Ooops... I hope that's not an Old Testament line. Honest I'm not in any white NAZI hate militias.
Honest... I mean... Honest!

What a ride.. literally!
This is equal parts James Bond, Rambo, Jason Bourne and Speed. A little bit of all the best action movies of my past...narration is getting somewhat better, but most of the American accents still sound like they are all from the Bronx. It's totally unrealistic, but that's what makes it so fun! Warning: The last 5 minutes will break your heart...

Efficient assassin
The plot shows a lot of promise as John sets off to help a teen age girl recover her brother. They are accompanied by an FBI agent after a quartet of bank robbers. After finding those for whom they search, the story turns into one of survival, evasion, resistance, and escape in the mode of Rambo. John adds significantly to his list of kills. For a man on the run from his demons, John Milton shows no mercy or remorse when killing his enemies.

John Milton does it again..
This was a good story, about John and the crazy thinking militia. Needless to say, he took care of those crazy idiots. But wow, what a lot of rain and cold he trekked through. I had to keep my blanket over me all the time, especially when he ended up in freezing water.
There was a little romance, sex that was fade-to-black and the F-bomb was used 38 times.
As for the narration: David Thorpe does an awesome job with every book.
