HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHERE IT HURTS...

‘This is crime-writing at its nerve-tingling best’
Harlan Coben

A killer is targeting lone women, torturing and murdering them. The precision of his methods leads Detective Jane Rizzoli to suspect he is medically trained.

Then Jane makes a terrifying discovery. Years ago a young woman was assaulted in a similar way. She escaped by shooting her attacker dead.

So why does it feel like he’s stalking her again?

Critic reviews

'Gerritsen uses prose like a scalpel to slice deep into your mind. Piling on shock after shock and twist upon twist, this is a book best read in one sitting and with the lights full on. A breathtaking and absorbing thriller.'

'If you're home alone, do not risk even the first sentence. Once you've started reading this book, putting it down and saving it till later is not an option.'

(Mo Hayder)

'The Surgeon touches the dark places only a hunted woman can know...This is a story that terrifies and heartens all at once. What a ride!'

(Iris Johansen)

'If you're squeamish, this book is going to make you squirm...Gerritsen makes it chillingly feasible that the person you enjoy a chat with every day might just be planning the right time to cut your throat. An unpleasant thought, but a valid end result of a taut, well-paced and thoroughly realistic thriller.'

'If you've never read Gerritsen, figure in the price of electricity when you buy your first novel by her, 'cause, baby, you are going to be up all night'

(Stephen King)

'Ingenious, ultra-gory . . . Hugely efficient, scary and gripping, distinguished from the bloody competition by what feels like sheer rage that such crimes against women can happen in the first place.'

'Remind me not to go to hospital anytime soon. The Surgeon grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go until its hair-raising finish. Deep, dark and very disturbing.'

(Tami Hoag)
"THE SURGEON is a real page-turner. A read-in-one-go novel if ever there was one.......... An excellent thriller that goes straight to the top of my list."

'The novel is a rare beast, a cautionary peep into the dark recesses of the mind and motivations of a serial killer, and a deep probe into the characterization of his pursuers.'

So gripping! While I was listening to it, I checked all doors and windows several times at night so terrified was I! Unputdownable! And really great narration, too. There is however no Dr Isles in this book and the Jane Rizzoli we meet is very different from the cool, beautiful, confident and popular Jane Rizzoli portraied on TV. I like the less perfect, more human version much more, I have to say.

What a page turner!

Remarkably fewer generic clichés per page than most crime writers ....
Refreshingly ambiguous and ambivalent characterization.
Critiques patriarchy intelligently without needing to sanctify female characters.
A real pleasure.

Not just your average procedural

This is a fairly standard murder mystery thriller. Serial killer outwits cops who don't follow some fairly obvious leads. One woman cop who is bullied but stands up for herself. Etc. Etc.

I will say that the characters in this had more flaws and moral depth than in your standard thriller and once the story got going 2-3 hours in it really picked up and by the end was quite compelling. I do think it could have been trimmed a bit by the editor but it was ok.

The narration was very quiet though. On all my devices I had to dial the volume up quite a few notches from what I would expect on normal audiobooks. This wasn't great when I switched from audiobook to car radio for the news.

Fair warning as well, in this book Rizzoli is a co-star and Isles doesn't yet exist. I haven't seen more than a few episodes of the TV series but I still found it a bit odd for the first book in a series called "Rizzoli & Isles".

Good but not great
