  • Summary

  • Diverse and moving, these six outstanding stories are meditations on grief and loss, love, communication and loneliness. Each one will take the reader on a brief yet unforgettable journey into private worlds and unexpected corners of the human heart.

The shortlisted stories have all been chosen for this year's Sunday Times Audible Short Story Award - the world's richest and most prestigious prize for a single short story, dubbed the 'equivalent of the Man Booker for the short story' by the Sydney Morning Herald.

The finalists of 2019 come from three continents, whose exceptional stories span such diverse territory as high end fashion, the Troubles, a disastrous poetry anthology cross-cultural romance and family secrets. But all are linked by their competence and artistry, through stylistic inventiveness, dark humour, intricacy, and a masterful formal control.

What can you do with a General

Narrated by the brilliant Peter Marinker, a tale of family life with undertones of previous cruelty or abuse. Brilliantly written without over dramatisation, just a grown up family muddling along together with an unknown history.

Review

Thought I would give something like this ago but found out this isn't my cup of tea. Well presented and clear but just could get into, but doesn't mean it's not for someone.

How did these become Award Winners

I struggled to get my head around some of these tales. Unusual or just weird, up to you?

A mixture of creative ideas & poetic wordplay

Kevin Barry's story was my favourite, purely for his use of language making it engaging and poetic in parts. The most creative story in this collection for me was Joe Dunthorne's. Some of the other stories ended on a strange note, and left me thinking, "Okay...". Overall, I'd recommend listening to all of them, as it's always good to check out emerging artists of any craft.

I love this series.

The stories are mostly excellent, some merely very good. Nicely read, and perfect length.
