Summary

So much screaming. Roger Huntington is home from college for the summer, and he and his best friend, Tooth, can't wait to start having fun. It's going to be a summer full of beer, comic books, movies, laughs, parties and maybe even girls. So much pain. The sun is high and the sky is clear as Roger and Tooth set out to shoot beer cans at Bobcat Mountain. Just two friends catching up on lost time, two friends thinking about their futures, two friends - So much blood. - suddenly thrust in the middle of a nightmare. Forced to fight for their lives against a sadistic killer. A killer with an arsenal of razor-sharp blades and a hungry dog. So much death. If they are to survive, they must decide: are heroes born, or are they made? Or is something more powerful happening to them? And more importantly, how do you survive when all roads lead to... death!

Torture porn.

This book is pretty much a textbook example of torture porn. Nothing more, nothing less.

Mediocre story, horrible narration

If you're into the "splatterpunk" genre this is definitely up your alley. Unfortunately, this book isn't really that great. The "torture" parts get repetitive after a while. The dialogue is kind of garbage. The characters are fairly two-dimensional. I think the worst part was the narrator though. His voice comes off as robotic and he puts emphasis in weird places that, to a native english speaker, just sounds weird. Overall I was very disappointed by this book; I was regaled with praise for it by a friend of mine, "It's a great book" "It's so sick and twisted" "The ending is so f****d up" but what I ended up with is a somewhat poorly written torture fantasy inexpertly narrated by what sounds like a text-to-speech program. Would not recommend. The next novel isn't any better, sadly, and same narrator to boot.

Hard Core Horror

This is one of those horror books where you don't want to read what is coming next because you know its going to be bad. And at the same time your turning the page to see what happens.

What makes this story bearable... Thomas is one hell of a good writer. His prose reads like King at his best, except its scary. King is not scary.

After Hissers and now this, Ryan Thomas is up there at the top of my author list. Thomas does best when he's character building. He's just so good. So when the terror hits, your reeling.

Crazy Carnage And Mediocre Writing

This sort of book was a first for me.
I am a huge horror movie fanatic, and I was very excited to listen to something that reminded me of Saw and Hostel.
Granted, this book is full on torture porn. And it ticked all the boxes in that regard.

But on the other side it is a very simple premise and execution. The star of this book is the carnage. Dialogue and character development had to take a backseat.

The narration is what I had the most trouble with. I had to speed up the narration, because it just felt extremely slow and stretched out. The acting of the dialogue in some scenes was horribly out of place, and took me out of the immersion when it did not fit with what the characters actions were in those particular scenes.

Overal I enjoyed my first venture into horror/torture novels, but the narration left a lot to be desired.

Other reviews drastically overrated this poor “Saw” alternative with no twists!

It’s a “gruesome” “gory” book that is just very underwhelming. There was nothing scary, it reminded me of watching a Saw film but with no twists. The narrator was lack lustre, and I only finished listening because it was so short. This is the first audio book I’ve ever struggled through, and I had high hopes based on all of the other reviews.

I cannot recommend this audiobook any less, please do yourselves a favour and avoid this.

this book is intense

This is a raw and relentless horror that holds nothing back. Even with its bitter sweet ending, this book will leave scars.

Too little plot spread over too much story

If you're looking for a gnarly story with lots of exploitative gore, you might enjoy this. I say "might" because this is only an "okay at best" story. I won't spoil the plot too much, but the first half is relative standard character building and the second half is a slog to get through. 50% of the book is an extended torture sequence with zero forward momentum from the plot, which could have worked if each interaction wasn't essentially a copy/paste of the one before. Shocking thing happens, narrator thinks "this is horrible," pass out, repeat. Do this over and over until the end of the book. There were sequences that should've been more horrifying, but it felt like the author themself was getting tired of the book and practically fastforwarded through some of the more grisly scenes.

I think what's even more infuriating is that the other set up an intriguing question that I thought was going to have immense payoff. One final hook that would've been a guaranteed "oh crap, that's awful," but apparently I gave him too much credit. The plot twist I thought he was leading up to didn't actually make an appearance.

Freaked me out in the best way possible

I was constantly freaked out and interested at the same time during this entire book. I’m a avid listener of true crime podcasts/books and even though this was fiction I felt like I was listening to a real case. AMAZING book if you like gore and crime!

A Fun and Extreme Ride

I didn't know what to expect when checking this out. Story wasn't anything too original, but it's told in a way that makes a little more unique. The main character was fun and I feel like if he were real, he would be one of my friends.

Overall, this was a fun extreme horror novel with solid storytelling and characters well developed. Narration was also solid.
