Summary

What would you do if your son became a stranger overnight?

Tired of their cramped London apartment, Aaron and Meera relocate to the idyllic village of Little Crake along with their two children, Noah and Uma. The new cottage looks out over the many miles of woodland beyond. It’s a far cry from their tiny flat and the perfect fresh start.

Until fifteen-year-old Noah wanders alone into the forest. For three days, a search party combs the woods. Aaron braces himself for the worst, convinced his son is lost forever. Until he finds Noah alive, hiding in the hollow of a tree. It feels like a second chance.

But why doesn’t Noah remember those three days in the woods? And why are there strange cuts slashed across his torso? Why did he cover himself in mud and hide away in an old oak tree?

Once a studious and gentle boy, Noah becomes a troublemaker at school. He withdraws from his family, sleepwalks at night, and creates eerie sketches of Dark Valley Forest. Aaron tells himself that Noah just needs time to readjust. He’ll soon be himself again. But Meera believes otherwise. This new version of Noah is harsh and cruel—a complete stranger.

A mother knows when something is wrong with her child. Aaron may be deluded, but she knows the boy who came back from the woods is not their son.

I enjoyed the overall concept but there were some things lacking in the style for me. That is just personal taste. It did hold my attention to the end and I listened in a couple of days.
The narration style, however, leaves something to be desired. Not enough emphasis in certain situations ,I think, again that's my opinion.
I would probably try another by this author but not by this narrator.

Pretty Good

Really enjoyed this, I could not stop listening for wanting to know what happened next. Really different format of story telling but it was gripping! Totally recommend!

Totally different and fully engaging

Despite the reviews, I'm becoming a massive fan of Sarah Denzil. This was a different kind of psychological thriller but it did get me thinking about the perils that a concoction of superstition and mental health can bring upon people. Interesting story. I look forward to discussing it at book club.

Glad I stuck with it till the end

Not at all what I expected as I’ve listened to a few by this author before, but I really enjoyed it! I am so glad I didn’t let other reviewers put me off.

Great audiobook!!

The story was so disjointed. I was hoping it would grow on me but a thriller it wasn’t. Whether fact or fiction was immaterial I found myself getting bored. I have listened to many factual history books that left me intrigued but it showed that performance is important. Music just dreadful

Music was off putting
