Summary

The Times Crime Book of the Year

The Radio 2 Book Club Pick

A dark story has been brought to terrifying life. Can the ending be rewritten in time?

Clare Cassidy is no stranger to tales of murder. As a literature teacher specialising in the Gothic writer R.M. Holland, she teaches a short course on them every year. Then Clare's life and work collide tragically when one of her colleagues is found dead, a line from an R.M. Holland story by her body. The investigating police detective is convinced the writer's works somehow hold the key to the case.

Not knowing who to trust, and afraid that the killer is someone she knows, Clare confides her darkest suspicions and fears about the case to her journal. Then one day she notices some other writing in the diary. Writing that isn't hers...

Critic reviews

"Compelling, intelligent and increasingly mesmerising." (Peter James)

"At once a homage to the Gothic thriller, and a re-imagining, it is goose-bump spooky, smart, and haunting, in every sense. I loved this book! And you will too." (Louise Penny)

Murder Mystery or Ghost Story??

Simple answer is both.Very clever piece that kept me gripped from page one to the unique climax.

Good but predictable

I guessed the ending very early on and was just waiting for it to be revealed. It's a good book but I don't think it's particularly memorable and a book that I would read twice. Good narrator

A brilliant study

I've always enjoyed Ely Griffith's writing but I didn't know she could write this well. Superb, and wonderfully performed too.

some narration was wooden

the story was good and did keep me guessing but the narrators who covered the voices of Harbinder and Georgia were very wooden. Harbinder is described as a strong, intelligent and opinionated character yet the voice was girly and lacked any gravitas. Not to mention very obviously read as there were poor inflexions so the performance was very wooden making the character less believable. Georgia's voice was much too childlike for a 15 year old girl. The voices of Claire and the male characters were very good however.

Didnt want it to end

Different feel fom Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway and Brighton series as it has multiple narrators. The characters even the minor ones were well rounded and believable. I was half expecting Cathbad to pop up when animal familars and appeasing the spirits came up. The interplay with the mother and daughters view of their interactions is amusing. The ghost story weaving it's way through worked especially well in the audiobook as the narrator for that section was incredibly creepy. Endings of both the ghost story and main story werent particularly satisfying tho but maybe I was involved in the characters and didnt want it to end. Would definitely get the next in the series.

Exceptionally wonderful book, brilliantly read!

Exceptionally wonderful book, brilliantly read! Loved every minute of it. Heartedly recommend it, and the constant injection of stand up worthy observational humour intertwined throughout the book, from all the principle characters, made it for me

Just OK

The narration was good but I think if I’d read this I would have found it just OK. The story was predictable in that I guessed the perpetrator almost immediately. The characters I found pretentious and one dimensional. The unnecessary repetition of the phrase Hell Is Empty was annoying. The writing was good but I felt the story very flakey and drawn out in parts almost as if the writer were trying to meet a publishers demands as to the length required.

Excellent book, I couldn't put it down.

I would love to see Elly's books as a TV drama especially the Ruth Galloway mystery's.

So Disappointing.

Having read and loved the Ruth Galloway series I was looking forward to this one. It’s not that the ending was easy to guess - I didn’t. More that by two thirds of the way through I didn’t care who the murderer was I just wanted to finish it so that I could listen to something else that was better.

A strange story

Strange rather muddled story. Found the characters rather uninspiring. So all in all a disappointing listen.
