Summary

Read by Dave Grohl. Features excerpts from five never-before-heard demos performed by Dave Grohl and an original story exclusive to The Storyteller audiobook.

So, I’ve written a book.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities (‘It’s a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!’), I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I’ve recorded and can’t wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or even hearing my voice bounce between the Kiss posters on my wall as a child.

This certainly doesn’t mean that I’m quitting my day job, but it does give me a place to shed a little light on what it’s like to be a kid from Springfield, Virginia, walking through life while living out the crazy dreams I had as young musician. From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old, to my time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop or playing at the Academy Awards or dancing with AC/DC and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, drumming for Tom Petty or meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Royal Albert Hall, bedtime stories with Joan Jett or a chance meeting with Little Richard, to flying halfway around the world for one epic night with my daughters...the list goes on. I look forward to focusing the lens through which I see these memories a little sharper for you with much excitement.

You Are Not Dave

I have finished listening to THE BOOK.

Forgive me my friends and family; I shall now stay in my dark - padded, silent, upholstered by the softest velvet - corner, rocking forever.

My dark corner will have the state of the art coffee machine - sorry, Dave, I am a coffee snob -, an endless supply of thought provoking podcasts and audio books, more coffee and endless videos and books on Dave.

I will stay there because… one simply cannot go back to normal life after such a force of life

My husband will, from now on, forever be called: You Are Not Dave.

I absolutely loved it. I laughed and cried and had goosebumps many, many times throughout the book.

Ah, Dave. Thank you. I too was a misfit, and I too am not Dave.

Thank you.

Aaahhhhhhhhhhh! What a book!

great book by the loveliest man in rock

I adore Dave Grohl and I'm a huge Foo Fighters fan so I was beyond excited to read this book. Dave's account of his life in music is exciting, humourous and poignant. The fact he reads the book himself really brings it to life. Some of the phrases really stuck with me: "We didn't have much, but we had enough":
an excellent book! It reminds me of when music was actually good! It makes you rediscover the Foo Fighters all over again. and, if you haven't listened to any of their music - go and listen to some!!!

In his own words

The energy of the book really telegraphs Dave's spirit. Sad, exhilarating, bittersweet, schmaltzy, triumphant and funny by turns. He's a talented narrator and this is an engaging listen. Great job 🤘

Fantastic

I don’t buy musicians autobiographies but I’m a die hard Grohl / Foos / Vultures / Nirvana fan so this was just awesome to listen to while sitting at my desk

Far too emotional.

Whilst his life story is interesting, I found the level of emotion & sentimentality to be a constant irritation throughout the whole book. Maybe it’s a difference between the British & the Americans as us British just don’t gush our emotions in the same way. It was an OK book though.

Beautiful

I always knew Dave Grohl was a giant among men, but this book takes him to a whole new level. Really recommend this read. Warning the Daddy daughter dance ruined me.

Rock n Roll hero

Hearing Dave Grohl telling his story filled me with such happiness. He is humble and excited to share tales of love for his family, love for his friends and love for music. My favourite biography yet. Also his timing as a drummer parallels his timing in life. I hope he does more.

Open and beautiful

I really enjoyed the openness and candid story telling. There were a couple of times I felt a lump in my throat. Such a refreshing memoir.

Amazing amazing amazing

this book has been so enjoyable because it allows us a peak into the life of one of the most talented musicians today.

It’s so great to hear that he is as humble in real life as he is on stage.

I’ve listened to this book two and a half times now ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just wish we could see the Foo’s in person in SA again (thanks Covid for ruining that possibility)

2 words… Fucking Amazing!

I’ve had the honor of meeting this legendary man that will for ever be written in the scales of music. But to hear him tell his stories made me not only laugh out loud but shed a tear more than once. If there is ever a book to enjoy and listen to this is the one. You will find such great respect for music, family and life just from his incredible words.

Thank you Dave, you have steered me into a direction I will always be grateful for.

An epic collection of stories

The book was brilliant. Having Dave narrate it was a real treat and his narration is the best I have ever heard - probably easier when it’s your own story and you have a studio at home to record in.

If you are even remotely a fan of Dave or the Foos then this is a must listen.

If I had one criticism of the book is the lack of in depth down dirty details. It’s no Herion Diaries, a lot more PG and the Nirvana years are glossed over pretty quickly. This might be out of respect for Kurt or the truce with Courtney. Or maybe Dave just wants a PG book his kids can read. Maybe we will get a book dedicated to the Nirvana era but this by no means detracts from this book.

The book is such high quality, with Dave composing original music he plays between chapters.

This was a brilliant experience in every way. The writing, the narration, the wisdom, the humor. It's so beautiful. I have loved the foo fighters forever and this memoir has given invaluable insight into the life of a truly remarkable human being whose been on an adventure of a lifetime.
