Summary

This is a sweeping history of Britain which answers the questions: 'Where do we come from?' and 'Where are the we going?'

When The Story of Britain was originally published to great acclaim in 1996, Andrew Roberts declared it 'classic popular history' and Antonia Fraser said 'History at its best'. Roy Strong's mission was to produce an accessible one-volume history which would clearly depict Britain's origins and explain how the past shaped our current identity.

He begins the story of Britain from the very earliest recorded Celtic times and has now brought it right up to date via the Blair years and into the present day of Brexit Britain. It is a remarkable achievement, and with his passion, enthusiasm and wide-ranging knowledge, he is the ideal narrator. His book should be listened to by anyone, anywhere, who cares about Britain's national past, national identity and national prospects.

Britain?

We’ll written/read, make no mistake though, this is the history of England. I learned nothing about the other countries that make up Britain.

History of England not Britain

Yet another disappointing and misleading history of “Britain“ that barely even mentions Scotland or Northern Ireland. They need to call these books a “history of England” because I have yet to find a history of so called Britain that even attempts to do justice to areas outwith.

Easy to listen to, lots of interesting content

I thought this was very easy to follow, quite comprehensive and also didn't feel too long.
There's a little bit more about religion in there than I would have liked but I suppose it's important for the history of Britain.
I played it at 1.15x the usual speed, but I generally found the narrator very clear and loud enough, with a very apt British accent 😂

Does exactly what it says in the tin!

A fantastic history of Britain, combining anthropology, biography and more traditional history to give an informative overview of British history from the Roman era through to the modern era.

Strong delivers a charming and informative story

Roy Strong is a charming and inspiring character and he brings his personality to the telling of the tale of Britain. I listened enraptured and noticed aspects of British history that had escaped me previously thanks to his narrative. Highly recommended

Great listen

This was as good a condensed history as I have listened to. Factual and unbiased. Twenty hours of brain food.
