Summary

Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the '90s about a women's book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a real monster.

Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

This predictable pattern is upended when Patricia meets James Harris, a handsome stranger who moves into the neighborhood to take care of his elderly aunt and ends up joining the book club. James is sensitive and well-read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn't felt in 20 years. But there's something off about him. He doesn't have a bank account, he doesn't like going out during the day, and Patricia's mother-in-law insists that she knew him when she was a girl, an impossibility.

When local children go missing, Patricia and the book club members start to suspect James is more of a Bundy than a Beatnik, but no one outside of the book club believes them. Have they read too many true crime books, or have they invited a real monster into their homes?

Such a fun audio listen!

This was my first Hendrix and I LOVED it! Its a fun, energetic horror that is not my usual genre but was so engrossing to read. There are moments that make you laugh, make you cringe, gory images that turn your stomach and a couple of serious incidents. So light hearted is definitely not the word but it's definitely not your serious horror either. It throws all sort of stereotypes out there and I know that's one thing Grady has been criticized over. But for me it forms an important part of the time and small town culture of the book - it's uncomfortable truths that aren't meant to be altogether pleasing. I loved the women of the book club and the strange James Harris, and couldn't help imagining how our local book club would deal with the same crazy situation 😂This was one of the funnest audio books I have listened to! I had a physical copy gifted to me after I started but I just wanted to keep going with the audio as the narration was so brilliant. The strong southern accent and different character voices brings the small town community feel to life

Overall a fun read that i am so glad I tried. I am definitely gonna dive into Hendrix's backlog

Scary, funny & cool

Grady Hendrix is like a quirkier, more interesting Stephen King. Loved the characters, the story and the narration.

Really enjoyed both the story and the narrator. The story was great and scary enough to stop me in my tracks and listen carefully. Highly recommend.

Conflicted

This book was amazing - the story got it's hooks into me and I couldn't stop listening! Alongside that I found it absolutely harrowing listening to the emotional and sexual abuse themes, and would forewarn potential listeners.

Wonderful

A fresh take on an old trope, but written with a sensitivity rarely seen in this genre. Scares in all the right places, and characters you grow to love and root for. Bahni Turpin's performance is marvellous and brings an extra dimension to this story.

Best listen of 2023

This is a firm favourite, the characters are fantastic and it has been written and performed perfectly. Just the right balance of paranormal, mystery and friendship. I listen to this when i’m in a slump, its that good!

Insubstantial...

1. If you could sum up ‘The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires’ in 3 words, what would they be?

- Deficient, displeasing and lacking.

2. How credible/believable did you find the narrator to be?

- Bahni Turpin’s narration was excellent and at times a much needed/appreciated stimulus.

3. Any additional comments?

- I had high expectations and have unfortunately been left feeling dissatisfied, wanting. The concept was original and imaginative, yet in my humble opinion poorly executed.

I read this in 2 days, really immersive storytelling which reminds me of books I read as a teenager. 😀
