Summary
Brought to you by Penguin. Life-changing opportunities pass us by every day – now we can train our minds to seize them
Self-help books like The Secret promise that we can tap into the 'law of attraction' to control our destiny, simply by changing our thoughts. If we strip away the mystique, at the heart of this idea is a fundamental truth that is backed up by the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience: most of the things we want from life – health, happiness, wealth, love - are governed by our ability to think, feel and act; in other words, by our brain.
Dr Tara Swart, a neuroscientist and executive coach with a background in psychiatry, is convinced beyond all doubt of our ability to alter how our brains work - and transform our lives. In The Source, she draws on the latest cognitive science and her experience coaching highly successful people to reveal the secret to mastering our minds.
With a four-step plan to awaken the power of your brain, this unique guide to life combines science and spirituality in a way that is open-minded and practical. Discover how to:
- Challenge 'autopilot' thinking and rewire your brain's pathways to fulfil your potential
- Manifest the things you want by directing your energy towards your deepest values and ambitions
- Harness the power of visualisation to prime your brain to grab opportunities and take control of your future
- Attack life with confidence, dispel fear and avoid negative thinking
Unlock your potential today – you are just four steps away from building a new confident you.
Critic reviews
"Tara Swart is an extremely calming presence, all the more so for being palpably intelligent. Her brain appears to require no boosting. I’d sign up in an eye blink...I like her - a lot." (Hannah Betts, The Times)
"Dr Tara Swart is friendly, charming, and knows what she’s talking about. Having qualified as a doctor, then trained as a neuroscientist, she worked as a psychiatrist before going into private practice as a highly sought-after expert to the rich and famous." (Janet Street-Porter, Daily Mail)
"Neuroscientist Dr Tara Swart works with some of the City’s highest-earning and most respected leaders in finance, law and media." (Evening Standard)

Helped me make changes
I like the concept, and I'd say it's a good book, but as an audio book it needs a bit of work. Spoken chapter numbers don't match displayed chapter numbers, which don't give any clues as to chapter content. So if you want to jump back, e.g. to do one of the suggested exercises, it's almost impossible to find. It also means the overall structure of the book is difficult to grasp. 'Six principles' might be mentioned and you're thinking 'well, what are they?' You can't help but lose track - I ended up adding my own notes. The producers could learn from other self help audio books - I've found Rangan Chatterjee's very clearly structured, for example.
That aside, I found it enjoyable and think it genuinely helped put me in a more positive and proactive frame of mind, which has led to change. The author's rather posh narration grated for about 2 minutes and then I warmed to her. Be warned, she does describe a doctor's salary as 'modest' at one point - her average client is likely much more wealthy than her average listener - but her suggestions are applicable to anyone.

I loved this book from start to finish and will definitely be listening to it again and again to find any other pearls of wisdom I have missed.

I’m going to listen to this again.
This book was so much more than I ever hoped for. I thought if I’m honest I would lose interest pretty quickly as I have a short attention span, but I listened the whole way through and found all of the content highly relevant and motivating. As a result I’ve identified my next career move, it will mean big changes, but I’m ready for it! 10/10 for The Source.

Alright
Need to be sat down with a pen and paper and in peace and quiet for quite a bit of this book - I’m usually driving when I listen to audio books - so unless you want to do the practical bits probably would give it a miss!

Absolutely loved it
Such a great book to unravel the workings of our mind and then offer some really simple, easy and manageable ways to change our thinking, patterns and behaviours.
Excellent book for anyone interested in self development and thinking outside the box.

Hard to listen to
There are some good concepts, although little that haven’t heard before. Found the narrator very hard to listen to, irritating and monotone, to the point where I had to switch off sometimes. Doesn’t really work as an audiobook, perhaps better in print? Disappointing overall.

Incredible book 🤩
Absolutely loved this! Ivdd we bought the hard copy to help me follow the exercises but the author is lovely to listen to and the mix of science and spirituality is perfect. The logic behind everything our brains do has really helped me cement some things I’ve been trying to tackle

Love it
I had already listened to a lot of podcasts and talks from Tara Swart therefore kind of had some spoilers of what she’s going to speak about in the book. However it’s good to see the science behind it.
