Eye opening read - positively relatable

I did even know this book was going to exist when I downloaded audible at the beginning of January. I got the app in hopes this year will be the year I listen to some self help books and try indefinitely to fix my ‘broken brain’ and mental health. As soon as I saw the title I was intrigued - it’s the best book I’ve ever come across. I didn’t want to accept I might actually have a problem until Millie talks about black outs and memory loss, which is progressively getting worse for me. I literally wake up at 5am after a drinking sesh and cry until the sun comes up because I have no recollection of what I did or said and most of the time I’ve really embarrassed myself. I’ve cried listening to this book because some of the facts are terrifying but I’m so glad I’m not alone and other people deal with this too. I’m about half way through but seeing this book was a sign sent from above and thank god for Millie Gooch.

I have learnt so much from this book!

I am now 8 months sober, the idea of coming out of lockdown and telling everyone when we can go out again is pretty scary. But having listened to this book, I have 100 more reasons to carry on with my sober journey, you've given me the reassurance that I won't be just 'the boring sober one'! Thank you!

game changer. Buy it!

Before you even get into it, Millie's narration makes you feel like you're listening to a mate on the phone. She is super relatable and the fact she's the same age as myself is honestly refreshing. I loved this so much I've bought the hardback to keep in my handbag for reference and I knowing it's arriving tomorrow is the best present to me, from me. I don't know how anyone could be disappointed with this book, it's an absolute belta. I found this right at the start of my journey and it couldn't have been more perfectly timed. If I could give this more stars I honestly would, I also NEVER leave book reviews so make of that what you will haha

Refreshing and honest

I decided to engage in Dry January this year for the first time and instead of just ditching the booze I wanted to educate myself on alcohol or a world without it! This audio book popped up in my search engine and the honest reason I clicked purchase was because it looked fun and friendly and welcoming! That’s exactly what it was. Everyday i listened to Millies soothing voice on the way to and from work in my car as she explained her sober journey! It was educational, fun but touched on all the main subjects. She has certainly made me question my relationship with alcohol and I hope I can use some of her advise to make healthier decisions in the future! I will defiantly be recommending this to my friends!

Adore it!

I love Millie's take on sobriety. I've read a lot of books on this subject, and for me this is by far the most relatable as someone who decided to turn away from drinking culture in my twenties. It doesn't focus on the "rock bottom" moments (there are plenty of other books that do, if that's what you need to read) but instead delves into both the scientific and social benefits of ditching the bottle. I love the ethos of this book, that sobriety is a big gain in opportunities rather than a sacrifice or loss. I've listened twice already and picked up totally new things each time.

thought provoking

As someone in their late 30s who was binge drinking wine once a fortnight i cannot say my patterns are the same as the authors. the book does focus on going out somewhat. however i can relate to the general themes reoccurring throughout and the toxic alcoholic fuelled behaviours she engaged in . the key is applying her advice generally. it was certainly thought provoking and has reaffirmed my questioning as to why i am drinking to excess and how odd to do that sat at home with hudband watching tv! and that its the time to quit this unhealthy pattern. she def focusses on sober versus sobercurious and justifies reasoning. i am sat on curious fence right now but can see after a few days digesting the book and one more week dry i will be sober for good because life is so much more than that tipsy feeling.

anyone who is dipping their toe i would highly recommend this overview style to get you motivated. read by the author, lastly i found it engaging throughout. good luck on your journey.

A very informative and interesting listen

I enjoyed this a lottt more than I expected and have learnt a whole lot too! Millie is open and honest from the beginning and despite being incredibly encouraging, she doesn’t come across opinionated or preachy. I think this is a wonderful read to anyone who is questioning their relationship with alcohol. I have found it helpful and inspiring, so thank you Millie!
