Summary

Like many women, Clare Pooley found the juggle of a stressful career and family life a struggle, so she left her successful role as a managing partner in one of the world's biggest advertising agencies to look after her family.

She knew the change wouldn't be easy, but she never expected to find herself an overweight, depressed, middle-aged mother of three who was drinking more than a bottle of wine a day and spending her evenings Googling 'am I an alcoholic?'

This book is the bravely honest story of a year in Clare's life. A year that started with her quitting booze and then being given the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer. By the end of the year she is booze-free and cancer-free, no longer has a wine belly and is two stone lighter and with a life that is so much richer, healthier and more rewarding than ever before. She has a happier family and a more positive outlook.

Sober Diaries is an upbeat, funny and positive look at how to live life to the full. Interwoven within Clare's own very personal and brilliantly comic story is research and advice as she discovers the answers to questions like:

  • How do I know if I'm drinking too much?
  • How will I cope at parties?
  • What do I say to friends and family?
  • How do I cope with cravings?
  • If I stop drinking, will I lose weight?
  • What if my partner still drinks?

And many more.

A brilliant inspiring account. It made me laugh and cry but above all it gives hope.

A Class Apart

Whilst Claire’s story inspired me and helped me on my journey, it is very much written for the more privileged of us which at times I found annoying. I suspect the journey is far easier when one is financially secure with no real money worries.

Sober sleep tastick, drinking zombie mornings

I’ve been trying to take control back of my sleep for years and devoured 6 or 8 sleep audiobooks on a loop a few years back. I did just about everything recommended in those books except giving up the drinking. Finally slowly I came to the conclusion that to cut down or cut out the drink if I was every going to get a full nights sleep and reclaim my mornings.
So though I didn’t really want to stop drinking completely, I was given a book by a friend that quit at new year. After reading most of it I downloaded 6 or 8 audiobooks, so I had plenty of reinforcement over weeks of listening. While I love to understand the scientific view of things the real life confessional format of sober diaries is so relatable and so funny. Beautifully written and laugh out loud entertaining. Heart warming stories. This should definitely be on your first batch of sobering up books u download.

Best book on giving up alcohol

I’ve read a few, but the sober diaries was real, honest and captured what it’s like to be wine dependent with young children. She’s posh, she’s annoying but she’s completely real and hides nothing about herself - and that’s amazing. It’s time to stop hiding who we really are so we can be our own hero’s and stop reaching for the wine. Thank you claire pooley, it helped me more than you’ll ever know.

Honest, witty and relatable! Narrated beautifully, at first I wasn’t convinced and by the end I wished it wouldn’t stop.
