Summary

The harrowing call comes from the NYPD: Willy's ex-wife Mary has been found dead in her Lower East Side apartment, and Willy is asked to identify the body.

Torn from his beloved Vermont, Willy returns to the city of his hard-drinking youth with misgivings that deepen when he sees Mary's sad corpse on a gurney. Because of a fresh puncture mark in her arm, the police think she overdosed. But Willy has doubts.

Driven by loss and guilt, Willy searches deeper and deeper into his past, to a long-ago Vietnam where he was a merciless loner known as the Sniper. Soon he will answer for his old sins....and live up to his chilling nickname.

Very enjoyable read

I've read all the books in order up to this one. Found all to have a good story, but as a Brit I find the politics surrounding some of the stories a little much and tended to switch off a bit. This book was just about the story and so much more enjoyable. The main character of the book is an interesting guy and it was good to see a glimpse into his past and why he is this type of man.

Great Book

This book I think is the best so far of the Joe Gunther novels which is odd because it's focused on Willie Kunkle. Great characterisation and the story is far better than a few of the past ones. This stands alone as excellent.

Best so far.

Great storyline. Really enjoyed this one. Some of the books have too many characters and are a bit confusing. This one less so. I love the police characters and the closeness of them. Having been a UK Police officer for 32 years, I can empathize and understand the closeness of the comradery between the team. That is real life which most members of the public wouldn't understand. This book makes you realise that cops are human and have flaws. Excellent.

A nice change of perspective

After 12 books I found this viewpoint both refreshing and engaging as the characters gained a more 3D impact. I am now regenerated to carry on

Perspective

Unique, from a different perspective this whole plot, book seemed to be more lively and gave a much added back story to the black sheep of the group of investigators, and great how it involved a different setting

excellent narrator

I don't enjoy each Joe Gunther book equally but I do really enjoy the narration. I am quite addicted to Tom Taylorson's voice.
So I will continue with the series.

Willie Kunkel... Take a bow

An absolutely fantastic book. Probably the best in the series so far. A side step into Willie Kunkels world, the true underdog and anti hero. I was gripped from start to finish and actually really sorry that it's finished. Really well narrated by Tom Taylorson as usual. Thank you.

Willy is everywhere

Story and narration are great, however I’m not sure Willy is the best name for a lead character…I mean, with people being slapped by Willy and surprised by Willy and grabbing Willy…

I love this addictive series

not the usual Gunther book but very entertaining and clever. Joe isn't quite the main character in this one but it works very well in the series. Wouldn't hesitate to reccomend it .

Brilliant

This was one of the best I've 'read' in the Joe Gunther series. Written with Willie as the central character, I found it easy to follow with not as many characters.... or maybe it's just because I enjoyed it more. One again, excellent narration
