Summary

A faded country house in the middle of nowhere. The guests are snowed in.

The murders begin.

Withering and waspish, Ursula Smart (not her real name) gate-crashes her mother's book club at an isolated country house for a long weekend retreat. Much to Mother's chagrin. Joining them are Mother's best friend, Mirabelle, Aunts Charlotte and Less, and Bridget with her dog, Mr. Bojangles. It doesn't matter that they've read Gone Girl three times this year already, this retreat is their chance to escape bustling suburbia. But someone has other ideas.

A body is found in the grounds.

Is a lone killer hunting them? Or has one of their own group embarked on a killing spree?

What they need is to stop sniping at each other long enough to solve the mystery before the killer strikes again.

What they need is a guide to survive.

Perceptive and witty

A great story. The book starts with a clever, witty and merciless description of the characters. It then follows a cunning, devious plot with murders and red herrings, all the while maintaining the rancour between the people involved but in a pithy way.

This has gone in the Did not finish pile

I had high hopes as the synopsis is everything I want from a book series..... but the hopes were very quickly dashed.
So very dull with unpleasant characters.
I don't usually give up quite so fast but it really really wasn't for me.

Totally Disappointed…Not As Expected

Started with high hopes that were soon dashed by profanities that I did not expect or appreciate. Followed by a seeming descent into the supernatural. I’m not prepared to listen any further . Wasted credit as I recently returned another book and can’t do so with this .

Different

This was quite an unusual book. Not the run of the mill crime story. The characters were amusing although not particularly likeable. A selection of strange oddballs.
I enjoyed it and will try another book by the author.
Excellent narration.

Fantastic sharp wit and a page-turning whodunnit

I loved this book!
Victoria Dowd’s wit is razor sharp. So many brilliant comments and observations. I wish I’d thought of them!
And the plot is just as sharp. A proper whodunnit where the bodies pile up and everyone’s a suspect.
The ending was a great surprise. I hadn’t seen it coming at all.
Well done Victoria! I eagerly await your next book. No pressure!
