About this listen

The sins of the past haunt an isolated farmhouse as a snowstorm rages outside . . . It’s not shaping up to be a very merry Christmas. Clover Moon feels trapped in her life as a farmer’s wife. She certainly doesn’t enjoy hosting Fergus’s mother, Violet, who always finds new ways to publicly humiliate her unsatisfactory daughter-in-law. But would Violet ever seek a more violent way of expressing her disapproval?

Violet is a medium, and the voices of the dead sometimes encourage her to do disturbing things. During her stay at the farmhouse, she claims to sense an intrusive presence. Fergus then discovers the dead body of a woman floating in their flooded cellar, and the elderly Miss Bates, a resident of a nearby senior home and a client of Violet’s, is missing . . . With her acute sense of human nature and gift for suspense, reminiscent of Barbara Vine, Gillian White will leave you guessing until the very end.

Having read other Gillian White's books I was very excited to be offered this one on Audible. I pride myself on always finishing a book but only made this to chapter 3. The reader's voice is dreadful, her characterisations are all over the place with weird accents which change mid speech. I'm sure there's a good story in there somewhere but I took none of it in as the reader's voice grates! If you are new to this author can I suggest you either read a paper copy or listen to one of Gillian White's audible books read by someone els.

Dreadful narrator

Where are Audible getting these dreadful narrators from? So many mispronunciations (why can they not get Aga right), and weird pauses. The different voices were just painful too. I’m glad I didn’t pay for this or I’d have wanted my money back! I struggled to finish it to see it if improved (it didn’t!). Would a different narrator have made the story better, yes undoubtedly but the story was still full of unlikeable characters with an improbable plot. Definitely not worth the listening time.

This was the worst narrated story I have ever heard. If I were Gillian White I’d complain to Audible. Shockingly, appallingly bad. The story might have had some sense but this reader drove you mad so you could not judge.

Narrative appalling.

I’d loved to know the story and I normally give every narrator a chance. Some get better within a couple of chapters. Some even get brilliant after losing first stage nerves. But this one beat me. Didn’t even make it to chapter 5 . Please audible there is a standard even if voices can be perceived differently by different people. But there are narrators who can’t express a story and have no feeling for transmitting a story. It’s a pity to not be able to finish a story and give it a chance.

I can’t listen any more, the voice of the narrator really hurting my ears. I tried different speeds to no avail. Needs re-recording with a different narrator.
