It took awhile before I got into this story. I started several times and then put it to one side again and again and again, while I listened to other audible books. I like Val McDermid stories so eventually started to listen again (from where I left off).
I don't know if it was the narrator or the serbia/croate divide that made this story hard going. I gave it 3 stars as the ending to the story was very good and having heard the ending may have to listen to this book again, but not yet.

Good Ending

Gripping and interesting story couldn’t stop listening.
Highly recommend can be read as stand alone but I’d say start at the beginning of the series.
Well read except the welsh accent

I enjoyed the story but there was slightly too much history of the Yugoslav war for my taste. I felt the story itself lost momentum during these descriptions.

An enjoyable story, well read.

Karen has a new job in Edinburgh with Mint as her sidekick and she gets the help from River again. After a skeleton is found we then go back in time to the Balkan conflict and the split of the old Yugoslavia, being part Croatian and having visited Dubrovnik and seeing the bullet holes still in some of the buildings.
I read some of the other reviews and can't understand the negative ones and as for the person who said he knew who done it from the start well maybe he should be a real cop.
I will admit its more about the characters than the the murder but still a fascinating listen as with all the series so far you go back in time and back to the present often.
The narrator was good maybe the best in the series so far but yes she struggled with the Welsh accent a bit. The book ended abruptly as all of the series so far I would much prefer to here the outcome.

I really enjoyed it
