The third book in the Karen Pirie series, from No. 1 bestselling author Val McDermid.

When a skeleton is discovered hidden at the top of a crumbling, gothic building in Edinburgh, Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pirie is faced with the unenviable task of identifying the bones. As Karen's investigation gathers momentum, she is drawn deeper into a dark world of intrigue and betrayal.

Meanwhile, someone is taking the law into their own hands in the name of justice and revenge -- but when present resentment collides with secrets of the past, the truth is more shocking than anyone could have imagined . . .

From number one bestseller, Val McDermid comes an atmospheric, spine-chilling tour de force -- her richest and most accomplished psychological thriller to date.

It took awhile before I got into this story. I started several times and then put it to one side again and again and again, while I listened to other audible books. I like Val McDermid stories so eventually started to listen again (from where I left off).
I don't know if it was the narrator or the serbia/croate divide that made this story hard going. I gave it 3 stars as the ending to the story was very good and having heard the ending may have to listen to this book again, but not yet.

Good Ending

At the start, I felt like many other reviewers, just ready to give up. But I didn't. Fortunately, it gets better after 2 hours.
At the start, everything is just OTT: the narrator is overly dramatic, to the point of being cringing, and the characters' descriptions feel almost like caricatures. The only reason not to give up is the good job the author does at describing historical events.
Then it all gets into a rythm and turn out to be a not too bad whosdoneit book. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to find out who the murderer it, but I don't mind that.

Gripping and interesting story couldn’t stop listening.
Highly recommend can be read as stand alone but I’d say start at the beginning of the series.
Well read except the welsh accent

Brilliant

I enjoyed the story but there was slightly too much history of the Yugoslav war for my taste. I felt the story itself lost momentum during these descriptions.

An enjoyable story, well read.
