Treason, heresy and revolt in Queen Elizabeth's England...
The year is 1600. With a dying queen on the throne, war raging on the high seas and famine on the rise, England is on the brink of chaos. And in London's dark alleyways, a conspiracy is brewing. In the court's desperate bid to silence it, an innocent man is found guilty - the father of Nicholas Shelby, physician and spy. As Nicholas races against time to save his father, he and his wife Bianca are drawn into the centre of a treacherous plot against the queen.
When one of Shakespeare's boy actors goes missing, and Bianca discovers a disturbing painting that could be a clue, she embarks on her own investigation. Meanwhile, as Nicholas comes closer to unveiling the real conspirator, the men who wish to silence him are multiplying. When he stumbles on a plan to overthrow the state and replace it with a terrifying new order, he may be forced to make a decision between his country and his heart...©2023 S.W. And so I reach my sixth listen to Nicholas Shelby's, Bianca Merton's, Ned's, and Rose's adventure mysteries and it has sustained me throughout the week, when the tensions simply got too much for me and I listened to 4 hours overnight to conclude the story and stop my fretting. Anyone used to this series will know its values not least the endearing and by turns frustrations that the characters can generate in you. Bianca's patience with Nicholas - born of love is so touching. The plotlines in this sixth novel are well set out and keep the listener as well as the characters guessing. To be expected in this series there is some darkness. There is a steady pace and then it is as if a dam breaks and the pace quickens creating such a satisfying ending. For reasons I will not explain, the listener will question what comes next. The audiobook is exceptionally well produced and Kris Dyer is one of my most favourite performers because of his understanding of the book, the characters and how to manage pace. he is the king of performer that make you want to find out what else in the audiobook world he takes charge of. Prospective listeners can trust to selecting this audiobook, but the story arch of the sixth novels is worth following from the start.

A Truly Excellent Sixth Novel

I enjoyed this book. The descriptions of London as it would have been then were fascinating and I really like the narrator

A great historical mystery

Plot is somewhat creaky and the denouement is poor. Having said that the sense of being amongst it all is very strong and it’s nice to see a lot of characters vom together from previous books in the series.

Weakest of them in my opinion

I like the development of the characters, the warmth of their interaction and the way the author links, real events people into fiction

Excellent

One of the author's better story lines, and satisfying ending. Better narrated than the former story, which wasn't edited properly.

Engrossing story line and well narrated
