About this listen

One fine day, A.D. 70, Sosia Camillina quite literally runs into Marcus Didius Falco on the steps of the Forum. It seems Sosia is on the run from a couple of street toughs, and after a quick and dirty rescue, P.I. Falco wants to know why.

Falco finds out that Sosia, the niece of a highly placed senator, holds the secret to a stockpile of silver pigs, ingots intended for no good use. Hoping for future favors from Sosia's powerful uncle, Falco embarks on an intricate case of smuggling, murder, and treason that reaches into the palace itself. And if he does not tread lightly, the treacherous puzzle of the silver pigs could buy him a one-way ticket to his own funeral pyre.

Lindsey Davis has a relish for Ancient Roman history that brings the period and way of life alive to the reader. Her main characters have warmth and immediacy, with a sense of humour throughout that raises many a chuckle. I painlessly absorbed a surface knowledge of Roman law, architecture, religious ritual and deities, etc., in a totally enjoyable way.
I first read this novel many years ago and so enjoyed the Audible version I am ordering more of the series.

Where does The Silver Pigs rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book was fun and informative. It was a decent whodunnit with the added bonus of teaching about Ancient Rome.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Silver Pigs?

Probably the description of Britain as the dregs of the Empire.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me smile.

Lumps of English silver kept me rapt.

I am writing this review after having read all 20 in the Marcus Didius Falco series. I has been about 10 months since I read the first one and when I did, I was enthralled. Being a big fan of roman novels, this was very different to the military stories I have previously read. The stories are like a murder mystery, told from the investigators point of view. However there is a comedic twist to the telling, with a lot of sarcasm and dry humour that has made me laugh out loud many, many times.
I initially felt the dialog was ahead of its time, but the more I read and took in the amount of detail that they include it kept me going. The characters are something else, they are funny and lovable.
I did loose interest around two thirds of the way through the series and took a break before going back to them. In some part I feel this might have been due to the lack of reading by Christian Rodska, who is the best reader for Falco. As his comedic timing and delivery of the sarcastic comments from the characters is amazing, as well as the fact that he manages to make every character sound different as though a full cast is reading it. He eventually came back to read the final few books, which I flew through. I am now left with an excitement to start reading the Flavia Alba series.
Amazing books, thank you Lindsey Davis.

FALCO!

Good mystery /murder with an Ancient Roman twist. Great characters, so I found I had a real interest in their welfare. Fantastic narrator , easy to listen to and managed to squeeze every ounce of humour out in all the right places. Liked it enough to buy the next in series.

Entertaining.
