About this listen

"I very much need to be dead."

These are the chilling words left behind by a man who had everything to live for - but took his own life. In the aftermath, his widow, Jane Hawk, does what all her grief, fear, and fury demand: find the truth, no matter what.

People of talent and accomplishment, people admired and happy and sound of mind, have been committing suicide in surprising numbers. When Jane seeks to learn why, she becomes the most-wanted fugitive in America. Her powerful enemies are protecting a secret so important - so terrifying - that they will exterminate anyone in their way.

But all their power and viciousness may not be enough to stop a woman as clever as they are cold-blooded, as relentless as they are ruthless - and who is driven by a righteous rage they can never comprehend. Because it is born of love.

Well read and up to Koontz’s usual standard of suspenseful rollercoaster narrative! Now for the next one...

Couldn’t stop listening

Having been a massive Koontz fan for years, I had been so disappointed with his last few novels that I had practically given up on him.
As this book had good reviews I decided to give it a go and I’m so glad I did! The book is fast paced with good characters and an almost (well, you never know) believable plot!
The narrator is ok but it did go to check my phone a few times because of the ridiculous long pauses between chapters but the story makes up for that!
Definitely worth it!!!!

Finally fantastic!

With the narrative pausing every few minutes to announce a new chapter I was losing interest. But I'm glad I stuck with it because it quickly became a very interesting story.
Thankfully it's only fiction, - or is it !

I almost gave up on this book.

An enjoyable story but not gripping in the way that many Dean Koontz books have been. The plot needed more depth, twists and turns. Left me feeling a little disappointed.

Interesting but not gripping

Great book very good characters took me a while to get used to the reader but she was the right pick.

Exciting story

Narrator wasn’t the best on some voices that changed throughout the story but didn’t ruin the story at all

It’s compelling but gets a little slow Nevertheless it’s a good thriller

I enjoy Dean Koonzt, but would rather read him than listen to someone else reading it. Unfortunately I am I n a situation in which I am losing my sight a n d therefore have little choice in the matter. My One complaint with narration, is the attempt of the narrator to speak the voices of the various characters within the story, it is so amateurish.

Audio books in general

... when narrators aren’t able to portray the opposite sex. All the men sound like they are characters from pokemon. I’ve heard good male narrators who can’t do women either. Otherwise the narration is good and reminds me of Kate Reading.

The story seems to be going nowhere. I’m 4 hours in and it’s a lot of detail and painstaking background but not much in terms of actual plot.

Irritating is unnecessary Koontz’s casual islamophobia when demonising militant groups but maybe this has something to do with the plot or maybe it’s just trying to capitalise on the zeitgeist...

I may revise the rating if I get further in this book.

I now know what women feel like...

This was pretty good at the start but slowly got more and more boring. I ended up speeding up the Audible reading to try and get to a good bit. it didn't work. The ending leaves you hanging as well.

Not great
