Summary

Fans of The Twilight Saga will be enthralled by the riveting story of Bree Tanner, a character introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits.

In another irresistible combination of danger, mystery and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of Bree and the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to an unforgettable conclusion.

'I'm as surprised as anyone about this novella,' said Stephenie Meyer. 'When I began working on it in 2005, it was simply an exercise to help me examine the other side of Eclipse, which I was editing at the time. I thought it might end up as a short story that I could include on my website. Then, when work started on The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, I thought the Guide would be a good fit for my Bree story. However, the story grew longer than I anticipated, until it was too long to fit into the Guide.'

Bree’s narrator excels

Stephanie Meyer’s writing prowess excels again. Whilst Bree is part of Victoria’s plan for vengeance you can’t help but sympathise with her. She’s lied to by Riley, at risk of being killed by others around her, yet she still is able to help the Cullens a little before Jane gives the order for her execution.

Excellent

thoroughly enjoyable listen. Hopefully Stephanie Meyers will write the tales of Freaky Fred. That would really be something!

Great short story

I love the Twilight series and this book fits nicely between Eclipse (book 3) and Breaking Dawn (book 4). I enjoyed the narrators voice and warmed to her character in the story. I definitely wanted to know more and this book filled in some gaps for me

Didn't disappoint

Having read all of the Twighlight saga novels I thought this may be a little disappointing. It was not. Even though I knew what would happen to Bree, somehow I kept hoping that she would make a different decision and was surprised at how sad I felt for her in the end. This goes to show that there are lot more stories to be told in this saga and I hope that the author does decide to write more - particularly 'Midnight Sun', 'Edwards' Story'.

Good to hear the other side of the story

Loved this novella - a brilliant idea to give a second view on the whole transition of becoming a vampire and that it is not the easy ride that Bella was fortunate to have. In the Eclipse Bree is protrayed as a vulnerable newborn who does not know anything about what is happening in the vampire world, this novella proves how wrong this is. Bree is an intelligent 15 year old who soon learns that each vampire is out for themselves and that all they were told by their leader Riley, who himself is only told certain things by Victoria, are not true and that there is so much to learn. By the end of the novella I became sad for Bree because you know what the outcome was going to be and she was finally coming to accept what she is and she would have enjoyed the vampire life and even falling in love. Thanks Stephenie for yet another interesting outlook of the vampire world. Can't wait to see what she does next!

I knew the ending... but still cried at the end!

I'd put off listening to this novella as I already knew what was going to happen at the end. I should have listened to it sooner! It really brought together parts of the story that were otherwise undiscovered. I felt a lot of empathy towards Bree although technically she was the 'bad guy'. I cried at the end knowing the inevitable, as she did also.

What happens to Fred?? Could we not discover his path through the unchartered world? Please write some more books Stephanie!!!

Deeply moving

Anyone reading this story will of course know how it ends. Readers of Eclipse will all be familiar with Bree's name, but once you read her story, it makes her death so much harder to bear. The world she enhabbits is dark and violent and the matter-of-fact way she tells it makes her story all the more tragic. It made me cry and I'll never be able to read about her death in Eclipse without crying in the future.

A highlight of the Twilight Saga

Really enjoyed this! I’ve been on a nostalgia kick recently following the release of Midnight Sun and has forgotten about this book. However, I think it’s one of the best in the series as a whole. Bree feels like a fully realised being and, I think, is proof that Meyer is a better writer than is often claimed. Definitely worth a listen!
