About this listen

At 25 Hank owns a small parcel of land in Australia's rural southwest where he supplements his income from the property with seasonal shearing. Hank is a "shearing gun" - an ace shearer able to shear large numbers of sheep in a single day. His own father kicked him out when his sexuality was revealed, and since no one would ever hire a gay shearer, Hank has remained firmly closeted ever since.

Elliot is the newbie doctor in town - city born and somewhat shell-shocked from his transplant to the country. When a football injury brings Hank to Elliot's attention, an inappropriate sexual glance and the stuttered apology afterward kick-starts their friendship. Romance and love soon blossom, but it's hard for either of them to hope for anything permanent. As if the constant threat of being caught isn't enough, Elliot's contract runs out after only a year.

It's a lovely book, perfectly balanced and a great love story! The two men are the cutest and their responses are believable and considered, rather than stupid and there purely for story as some books can be.

Would you be willing to try another one of Dave Gillies’s performances?

No, this is the second book I've listened to narrated by Dave Gillies and his accent and voice doesn't work for me.

Any additional comments?

Such a shame as I love the book, I just couldn't listen to the audio, ended up DNFing.

Great Story, Shame About The Narration

This story was ok (though the dirty talk was a bit cringeworthy, and I got a bit bored of all the internal monologuing about coming out of the closet). The narration, however, was dreadful. His intonation and pronunciation was really odd, and even if it’s an Australian accent I’ve not heard before, it was clear that it was the narrators own voice that was the problem. Elliot sounded like a 12 year old boy and it didn’t fit with the character who was supposed to be an average sized typical guy who had ladies fawning over him. Hank should have had a sexy manly voice too, but he just didn’t. I nearly stopped listening so many times, but kept going because the reviews on Goodreads are good and I wanted to give it a chance. It didn’t improve!

I listened to The Blinding Light by the same author just before this book and it was so much better - both the story and the narration.

Awful narration, ok story
